Villa La Dogana B&B di Charme – Historic Villa with a beautiful garden – private parking
Lucca, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Villa La Dogana? It’s actually tucked away on Via Pisana – not the busy shopping street in the center, but the quieter stretch where locals still hang their laundry and you can hear church bells instead of tour buses. The whole place feels like someone’s elegant grandmother decided to open her doors to travelers, which honestly isn’t far from the truth. The villa itself has that weathered Tuscan charm that you can’t fake – thick stone walls, shutters that have seen decades of summer sun, and a garden that’s clearly been loved for generations rather than just landscaped yesterday.
The private parking is a godsend, and I mean that literally if you’ve ever tried navigating Lucca’s medieval streets with a rental car. Most B&Bs in the area make you park outside the walls and drag your luggage through cobblestone alleys, but here you can actually pull right up to the property. The rooms have this lived-in elegance – not hotel-perfect, but authentically Italian with original tile floors and furniture that looks like it belongs rather than ordered from a catalog. My room had these incredible old wooden beams overhead and windows that opened onto the garden where I could hear the owners’ conversations drifting up in rapid Italian mixed with English for the other guests.
What really sets this place apart is how it sits in relation to everything else. You’re technically outside Lucca’s famous walls, but it’s maybe a ten-minute walk to Porta San Pietro, and honestly, that distance works in your favor. The evening passeggiata along the ramparts is lovely, but then you get to retreat to this peaceful bubble where the only sounds are crickets and the occasional Vespa puttering past. The breakfast happens in this sun-drenched conservatory overlooking the garden – proper Italian coffee, fresh pastries from the local panetteria, and the kind of regional jams and honey that make you want to ask where they bought them. The hosts clearly know Lucca inside and out; they steered me toward a tiny osteria near San Frediano that I never would have found otherwise, and away from the tourist traps near the Duomo. The 9.3 rating makes perfect sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be a luxury hotel, but it nails exactly what it is: a genuine slice of Tuscan life that happens to have really comfortable beds and impeccable attention to detail.
