B&B Principe Calaf 3
Lucca, ItalyYou know what? I almost drove right past B&B Principe Calaf when I first arrived – it’s tucked away on Via Vecchia di Nozzano, which honestly feels more like a quiet residential street than somewhere you’d expect to find a hotel. But that’s actually part of its charm. You’re about ten minutes from Lucca’s famous walls (the ones everyone cycles around), but you get to stay in this peaceful pocket where the only sounds are church bells and the occasional Vespa puttering by.
The place has this lived-in elegance that I really appreciated – it’s definitely upscale with that 4-star polish, but not in a stuffy way. The owners clearly put thought into the details without going overboard. My room had these beautiful old wooden shutters that actually worked properly (you’d be surprised how rare that is), and the bed was one of those firm Italian ones that somehow left me feeling more rested than the pillow-top monsters back home. The breakfast spread was proper Italian – fresh cornetti from a local bakery, good coffee that didn’t taste like it came from a machine, and they had this incredible local honey that I’m pretty sure spoiled me for life. I mean, I actually asked where they got it because I wanted to buy some to take home.
What really won me over was how the staff treated the place like it mattered to them personally. When I mentioned I was planning to visit some of the smaller churches outside the city center, the guy at reception drew me a little map and told me which ones were worth the walk versus which ones I could skip. That kind of local knowledge is gold when you’re trying to make the most of your time. The parking situation is decent too – there’s a small lot that comes with your stay, which saves you from the headache of navigating Lucca’s narrow streets looking for a spot. I stayed there in late September when the summer crowds were thinning out, and it felt like I had this perfect little base camp for exploring the area. The walk into town takes you past some gorgeous old villas with those typical Tuscan gardens, and you can easily pop back for an afternoon rest without feeling like you’re trekking to the suburbs. Honestly, with an 8.6 rating, it’s clear other people have figured out what makes this place special – it’s got that sweet spot of being nice enough to feel like a treat but authentic enough that you feel like you’re actually experiencing Italy, not just visiting a hotel that happens to be there.

Great rate
What could be improved: Nothing to write here. Everything was ok.
What could be improved: Nothing.
What could be improved: Finding the hotel entrance is a bit tricky. A sign at Via Vecchia di Nozzano and another on the corner in front of #171, would make it much easier.
What could be improved: No AC in the room. Inside was warmer then outside
What could be improved: The outside area could use an upgrade with some trees and plants to give some shadows and also would give the place a more courtyard feeling - the house is really nice renovated but the outside area doesn't match the house
