La Lucertola

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to La Lucertola on Via di Cavina, I wasn’t expecting much from this little spot tucked away in Pugnano. I mean, you’re about fifteen minutes outside Pisa proper, and the street itself feels pretty residential. But then you walk through those doors and, well, it’s like stepping into someone’s incredibly well-appointed Italian home rather than a typical hotel.

The thing about this place is that it actually feels like a proper five-star experience without any of that stuffy formality you sometimes get. The staff genuinely seem to care about getting the details right – they remembered my name after the first day, and when I mentioned I was hoping to catch the early train to Florence, they had coffee ready at 6:30 AM without me even asking. The rooms themselves are beautifully done, with these gorgeous exposed beams and marble bathrooms that somehow manage to feel both luxurious and lived-in. You know what I loved? The windows actually open properly (sounds silly, but you’d be surprised how many hotels have those awful sealed windows), and on quiet mornings you can hear the church bells from the village center.

Location-wise, Pugnano is one of those places that grows on you. Sure, you’re not walking to the Leaning Tower from here, but honestly? After a day of fighting crowds in Pisa, it’s pretty wonderful to come back to this peaceful little village where the biggest excitement is the evening passeggiata down to the local bar. There’s decent parking right at the hotel – crucial if you’re driving, because street parking in these old villages can be a nightmare. The train station in Pisa is maybe a twenty-minute drive, and if you’re planning day trips to Lucca or the Cinque Terre, you’re actually in a pretty sweet spot. Plus, there’s this fantastic little osteria about a five-minute walk away that serves the kind of ribollita that makes you understand why Tuscans are so proud of their food. The hotel staff will point you toward it, but they’re not pushy about their recommendations, which I appreciated. I’d definitely stay here again – it’s got that rare combination of genuine comfort and local character that’s getting harder to find these days.
