The whole place smells faintly of rosemary and that particular scent of old stone that’s been warmed by the sun all day.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I booked: this isn’t one of those places where you’re fighting for pool chairs or dinner reservations. It feels intimate – almost like staying at a friend’s incredibly well-appointed country house, if your friend happened to have a professional chef and housekeeping staff. The surrounding area is perfect for morning walks (there’s a little church about ten minutes down the road that most tourists never find), and you’re actually close enough to both Siena and some of the smaller hill towns that day trips don’t feel like a production. Parking is effortless, which anyone who’s driven in Tuscany will appreciate, and the evening quiet is something special – just cicadas and the occasional church bell from town. If I had to find fault with anything, it might be that the place is almost too relaxing; I kept planning to explore more of the region and ending up reading by the pool instead. But honestly? Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
