Borgo Argenina
Monti, ItalyYou know what really gets me about Borgo Argenina? It’s one of those places that feels like a secret even though it’s sitting right there in plain sight. I mean, you’re driving through these rolling Tuscan hills near Gaiole in Chianti, and suddenly there’s this restored medieval hamlet that looks like someone polished up a fairy tale and decided to let people sleep in it.
The thing is, this isn’t your typical Tuscan hotel where they’ve stripped away all the character to make room for marble bathrooms. Here, you’re actually staying in what used to be a 13th-century village – and honestly, they’ve done something pretty special with it. The stone walls still have that slightly uneven texture that tells you they’re the real deal, and the rooms manage to feel both ancient and surprisingly comfortable. I stayed in October (perfect timing, by the way – the crowds thin out but the weather’s still gorgeous), and my room had these thick walls that kept everything dead quiet at night. The heating actually worked properly too, which… well, let’s just say that’s not always a given in these historic places.
What really sold me on this place was the location itself. You’re tucked away in this valley called Località Argenina – which sounds fancy but basically means you’re surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, with the kind of silence that makes you realize how much noise you live with normally. The nearest real town is Gaiole in Chianti, maybe a ten-minute drive down winding roads that are honestly half the fun. Perfect for picking up supplies or hitting up that little enoteca everyone raves about. The hotel’s restaurant is solid (they do this incredible thing with local wild boar), but having Gaiole so close means you can explore without feeling trapped.
Here’s something I wish someone had told me: parking is easy, which is actually a huge deal in this part of Tuscany. Most places have you wrestling your rental car through medieval streets barely wide enough for a Fiat 500, but here you just… park. Simple as that. The staff seems to genuinely enjoy what they’re doing too – not that overly polished hospitality thing, just real people who know the area and will point you toward the good hiking trails or tell you which vineyards are worth visiting.
The whole experience feels sort of effortless, which I think is the point. You wake up, grab coffee on your terrace overlooking the valley, maybe wander through their gardens where the herbs smell incredible in the morning sun, and suddenly you understand why people lose their minds over Tuscany. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place you’ve ever stayed – it’s just trying to be the most Tuscan, if that makes sense. And with a 9.5 rating, I’d say they’re pretty much nailing it.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The sink in the bathroom didn't work too well. We also had a bug problem however the staff were very quick to rectify it. Bath towels are not exchanged unless you sleep 7 nights which is a bit too long especially in summer when you take frequent showers. All in all though, we still liked it a lot.
What could be improved: Absolutely nothing
What could be improved: Could not fault anything.
What could be improved: Everything was amazing.
What could be improved: Paying for washing tablet
No on-site restaurant, and the nearest options are 20+ minutes away. The shared kitchen isn’t for cooking, which wasn’t clearly stated, so we had to change our dinner plans. No coffee/tea in the rooms, and making a cup in the shared kitchen costs €1. The narrow private road makes two-way driving and parking tricky when it’s full.
None of this ruined the experience—just good to know in advance.
