Country House il Ciliegio
Roccatederighi, ItalyYou know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Country House il Ciliegio on Via Gorizia – I mean, Roccatederighi isn’t exactly on the typical Tuscan tourist trail. But honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place so special. It’s tucked away in the Maremma hills where you actually get to experience authentic Tuscany instead of fighting crowds in Siena or Florence. The building itself has this weathered stone charm that feels genuinely lived-in, not like some renovated fortress trying too hard to be rustic. There’s this massive old cherry tree (ciliegio, get it?) that dominates the courtyard, and depending on when you visit, you might catch it in full bloom – absolutely stunning in late spring.
What really got me was how the owners seem to understand what travelers actually need. The rooms have that perfect balance of old-world character and modern comfort – thick walls that keep things cool during those brutal summer afternoons, but also proper Wi-Fi and air conditioning that actually works. The bathrooms are updated without being sterile, which is honestly a relief after staying in some “authentic” places where authentic apparently means questionable plumbing. Parking is right there on the property (trust me, this matters when you’re navigating these narrow Tuscan roads), and the whole place has this quiet energy that makes you want to slow down. I spent way too much time just sitting on their terrace with morning coffee, watching the mist lift off the surrounding hills.
The location is actually brilliant if you want to explore the real Maremma region. You’re about twenty minutes from the thermal springs at Saturnia – go early morning or late evening to avoid the tour buses. Massa Marittima is a quick drive and has this incredible cathedral that most people miss. The staff knows all these local spots and they’ll point you toward family-run restaurants where you won’t find another tourist. There’s this one place in nearby Montemassi they recommended where the wild boar ragu was probably the best thing I ate in Italy, and I mean that. The whole area feels like Tuscany from thirty years ago, before everything got so polished and expensive. Sure, you’re not walking to the Ponte Vecchio from here, but you’re getting something better – a chance to actually experience how people live in this part of Italy. The rating of 9 out of 10 makes complete sense once you realize you’re not just staying at a hotel, you’re getting an insider’s introduction to a corner of Tuscany that still feels like a secret.

Guest Reviews
Because the hostess is so friendly. She helped us when we experienced some noise from people outside. Very communicative host.
Roccatederighi is bit far away from large places, however, you can take your car or train from Grosetto. And we really enjoyed the quiteness. There are several places to eat in the town and we enjoyed il sesto canto. We even went there twice because the food is extraordinary and for what you receive not too pricey. If you prefer a more cheaper meal there are plenty other options like the pizzeria. We also cooked twice which was quite easy.
Thanks for the lovely trip!
What could be improved: Nothing
Breakfast sweet ok, yogurt croissant fruit juice coffee
The place had an amazing landscape view.
It was big and comfortable and there is a kitchen where you can cook.
What could be improved: The local restaurant has little variety. However, u must have a car. If you have a car then you can go out and enjoy more variety and even a nice beach. Wine tasting a must and a lot to see, but it is imperative to have a car, so book a car way in advance so it's cheaper
What could be improved: All very nice.
What could be improved: Nothing, it was perfect.
