B&B Il Palazzo
Sansepolcro, ItalyI’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to B&B Il Palazzo, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The address says Frazione Montagna, which is basically this tiny hamlet just outside Sansepolcro proper, and you’re driving through what feels like proper Tuscan countryside (well, technically we’re in Umbria here, but the landscape doesn’t really care about regional boundaries). The building itself is this beautifully restored palazzo – I mean, you can tell it’s got serious history just from the stonework and the way it sits on the hill.
What really struck me was how quiet it gets out there, especially in the evenings. You’re maybe ten minutes from the center of Sansepolcro, but it feels like you’re in your own little world. The owners – and this is the kind of detail that matters – actually know their stuff about the area. They pointed me toward this little osteria down in the valley that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned I was interested in Piero della Francesca (since you’re literally in his hometown), they had these great suggestions that went way beyond the obvious tourist spots. The rooms are exactly what you’d want from a place like this – original details that feel authentic, not like someone’s Pinterest idea of rustic Italian style. My room had these thick stone walls that kept everything perfectly cool even during a pretty warm September, and honestly, the bed was one of those where you just sink in and don’t want to get up.
The breakfast situation deserves a mention too – they do this spread with local stuff, including what I’m pretty sure was their own olive oil and some of the best pecorino I had during my entire trip through central Italy. You eat outside when the weather’s good, looking out over the hills, and there’s something about the morning light there that makes you understand why so many painters ended up in this part of the world. Parking’s easy (which, if you’ve driven around Italian hill towns, you know is not something to take for granted), and the whole check-in process was refreshingly straightforward. The only thing I’d mention is that you definitely want a car if you’re staying here – it’s not the kind of place where you can just walk to restaurants and shops. But honestly, that’s part of the appeal. You get that authentic countryside experience without sacrificing comfort, and the 9.5 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been there. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and actually enjoy where you are, instead of just rushing through to the next thing on your itinerary.
