First Impressions

Driving up to Il Cardo Resort through the rolling hills of Tuscany, you know you’re in for something special. This four-star property sits just outside the medieval walls of Anghiari, and honestly, the setting alone is worth the trip. The resort feels like it grew out of the landscape — stone buildings that blend seamlessly with the ancient olive groves and cypress trees that surround them. There’s something quietly elegant about the whole place that hits you the moment you arrive.

Location & Surroundings

What I love about this spot is how it strikes that perfect balance between tranquil retreat and accessibility to one of Tuscany’s most charming hill towns. Anghiari itself is maybe a five-minute drive away — this gorgeous medieval village that most tourists somehow miss, which means you get to explore cobblestone streets and local trattorias without fighting crowds. The resort’s position on San Lorenzo gives you these sweeping views across the Tiber Valley that change throughout the day. I mean, you’re looking out at the same landscapes that inspired Renaissance painters, and it shows.

The Accommodations

Each room here feels thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter corporate. The interiors blend traditional Tuscan elements — think exposed beams and terracotta floors — with modern comfort that actually works. What struck me most was the attention to detail: quality linens, proper lighting for reading, and those little touches like locally-made soaps that show someone cares. The bathrooms are spacious (always a relief in Italian hotels), and most rooms have either terraces or garden access where you can sit with your morning coffee and just… breathe.

Dining & Amenities

The breakfast spread here is honestly impressive — they’ve got everything from traditional Italian pastries and local cheeses to full English options if that’s your thing. I was particularly happy to see proper vegetarian and gluten-free choices that didn’t feel like afterthoughts. The restaurant focuses on regional cuisine using ingredients from local producers, which sounds cliché until you taste how much difference it actually makes. There’s also free parking on-site, which might not sound exciting but trust me, after navigating narrow Tuscan roads, you’ll appreciate having a guaranteed spot.

Why Guests Love It

The numbers tell part of the story — couples consistently rate this place 9.3 for location, and the overall 9.1 rating reflects what you experience day-to-day. But what really makes Il Cardo work is how it feels like a genuine retreat rather than just another hotel. The staff knows the area inside and out, so they’ll point you toward that hidden Etruscan site or the family winery that doesn’t advertise but makes incredible Sangiovese. You’re close enough to explore places like Sansepolcro or even day-trip to Florence, but far enough from the tourist machine to remember why you fell in love with Italy in the first place. It’s the kind of place where you actually slow down — and these days, that’s pretty rare.

Locals suggest to book apartments in Tuscany around Montepulciano for wine cellars, artisan cheese shops, and jazz nights.

Absolutely our best stay in all of Tuscany! It's a huge pity that it rained, otherwise we would have enjoyed the pool. As soon as you open the first door, you are greeted by an amazing atmosphere. The owner was the kindest host we could have ever wished for. We will definitely come back again.

We loved our stay! They put so much love into every detail. Everything is very clean, tidy and full of love. The small town of Anghiari offers many small restaurants, beautiful hiking trails and much more. Anghiari is just a 20 minutes walk away from the resort and it’s really worth it. We loved our sundown walk to the city.
For us it was a very relaxing time and we had a great stay. We really enjoyed the peace and this great atmosphere. The whole property with the big pool was very nice and well maintained and the two hosts always offered great deals like Italian cooking classes. Our favourite was the breakfast, fresh specialities were offered every morning, that was really great. We will come back anytime. Thank you!

The resort is located in a very quiet place with picturesque nature around. The property itself was just stunning - a cozy and romantic farmhouse. We were positively surprised by the size of the room and the fact that even without the air conditioning, the room was relatively cold for a comfortable night's sleep. The staff was amazing - the owners attended to all our needs and requests and were generally very friendly. The resort offers a cooking class which was a great way how to spend an evening and learn how to prepare traditional types of pasta. We spent quite a few days hiking. There are a couple of places you can hike to - Monterchi, Citerna, Sansepolcro, and a number of "castellos" located on the hills around the resort. The nearest town of Anghiari was the cutest little medieval town we had ever seen.

We felt so very welcome and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The house was beautiful and fully met our expectations. Also the surroundings offer many possibilities. We did a cooking course in the hotel, which was much fun.
