Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of countryside places in Tuscany, but Villanovia Country House genuinely surprised me – and that’s saying something after years of travel writing. The moment you pull up that winding strada toward Volterra (honestly, GPS gets a bit confused out here, but locals know the Batazzone road well), you realize this isn’t your typical agriturismo trying too hard to be rustic. The building itself has this weathered stone thing going on that feels completely authentic – not like someone slapped “country” onto a modern hotel and called it a day.

What really gets me is how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between rustic charm and actual comfort. The rooms… well, they’re what you’d hope for but rarely find. Thick walls mean you’re not hearing every conversation from the hallway, and the beds are genuinely good – I mean, I slept better here than I did at that fancy place in Florence the week before. The bathrooms actually have proper water pressure too, which honestly can be hit or miss in these converted farmhouses. You know what I loved? The little details that show someone actually thought about what guests need. Real reading lights, enough outlets for your devices, and – this might sound weird – but the windows open in a way that makes sense. Sometimes it’s the small stuff that matters most when you’re trying to unwind.

The location is pretty brilliant if you know the area. You’re maybe fifteen minutes from Volterra proper, which means you can duck into town for dinner (go to Da Bado if you can get a table) but escape all the day-tripper crowds that descend on the city center. I actually walked the path to town one morning – it’s doable if you’re into that sort of thing, though most people will want to drive. The staff mentioned they can arrange pickups from the train station in Volterra, which is genuinely helpful since not everyone wants to deal with Italian rental car adventures. What struck me most was how quiet it gets at night out here. I mean, proper quiet – just crickets and the occasional distant church bell. During high season (July through September), you’ll want to book way ahead, but honestly, shoulder season might be even better. The weather’s still gorgeous in May and October, and you’ll have the place more to yourself. That 9.6 rating isn’t just people being generous – this place actually delivers on what it promises, which is rarer than you’d think.

Great, well maintained Tuscan Villa and beautiful landscape We spent a full week at Villanovia and celebrated my birthday at this place. The house is spacious, there is a pool, a ping pong table and the area around it is also amazing with a lot of different seating areas to choose from. It’s everything you would expect from a Tuscan retreat. Marco, the host, is very helpful and will make sure your stay is comfortable. He lives right next door and will also help you out with any small everyday things that might occur. He even cleaned the pool for us in the morning. He is also always good for an interesting little conversation. And they kindly even provided me with a cake for my birthday. Pizza as a service can be booked and is served freshly made from the stone oven if you ask for it. The house is in the Tuscan hills, a bit outside of any other civilization (without being too far from the city). Incredible sunsets and stunning nature. There is everything you need in terms equipment; we as a group of 20 people managed cooking and all other every day chores very well there. The rooms with the individual bathrooms and aircon kept our guests comfortable. Thanks for the great time!

We were 18 people consisting of 5 couples with children in different ages. The house was perfect. There were plenty of space for the children to play and bath, and for the adults to find peace and quit. About 30 min to drive to Volterra.

Kommen gerne wieder!

Gorgeous views! Stunning house! Very relaxing! We liked EVERYTHING! It is a beautiful house and fit all 14 of us - plus two babies. It is in a very rural area with no neighbors. Utter privacy. We had some of the 'nonne' from the area come in to cook and clean up for us for most nights and it was soooo amazingly good. The ladies and their sons who helped were lovely and the food was very authentic to the region. We were easy drives to Siena, Pisa, Luca, San Gimignano, and Florence. Volterra is the local hilltop fortress town which had a very good food store and a Roman amphitheater and restaurants. The restaurants scattered along the main road were very good for lunches. Plus, there are lots of walks from the villa. Marco, the owner, was very responsive to all of our needs. We loved it.

What could be improved: Nothing. We liked it all.

What could be improved:

What could be improved: Route d’accès difficile surtout avec une voiture plutôt basse
