You’re maybe fifteen minutes from Volterra proper, which means you can duck into town for dinner (go to Da Bado if you can get a table) but escape all the day-tripper crowds that descend on the city center. I actually walked the path to town one morning – it’s doable if you’re into that sort of thing, though most people will want to drive. The staff mentioned they can arrange pickups from the train station in Volterra, which is genuinely helpful since not everyone wants to deal with Italian rental car adventures. What struck me most was how quiet it gets at night out here. I mean, proper quiet – just crickets and the occasional distant church bell. During high season (July through September), you’ll want to book way ahead, but honestly, shoulder season might be even better. The weather’s still gorgeous in May and October, and you’ll have the place more to yourself.
