B&B La Pecora Nera
Volterra, ItalyYou know what struck me first about B&B La Pecora Nera? The name – “The Black Sheep” – which honestly had me curious before I even arrived on Via Mazzolla. It’s this quiet residential street in Mazzolla, and I mean quiet in the best way possible. You’re not dealing with tourist crowds or traffic noise here, just the kind of peaceful Italian neighborhood where locals actually live and work.
The building itself has that authentic Tuscan character that you can’t fake – thick stone walls that keep things naturally cool even in summer, and these gorgeous wooden shutters that the owners clearly maintain with care. When I checked in, the family running the place (and yes, it actually feels family-run, not corporate) mentioned they’d been restoring the property for years, keeping original details while making it comfortable for guests. The rooms have this perfect balance of old-world charm and modern convenience – the kind of place where you get proper water pressure in the shower but still feel like you’re staying somewhere with real history.
What really sets this place apart though is how they handle the local experience. The breakfast spread includes ingredients from nearby farms, and I’m talking about the kind of fresh ricotta and local honey that makes you understand why Italians are so particular about their food. The owners – and this is where staying at a proper B&B pays off – actually know the area intimately. They pointed me toward this little osteria about ten minutes’ walk away that I never would have found on my own, plus gave me the real story about which hiking trails are worth your time and which ones are just tourist traps. The location in Mazzolla puts you close enough to the bigger Tuscan destinations without being stuck in the thick of everything – you can actually find parking when you come back in the evening, which anyone who’s driven around Italian hill towns will appreciate. The 8.8 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but it delivers exactly what it promises with genuine warmth and attention to detail that bigger places just can’t match.

What could be improved: Rien
Our landlady is a ray of sunshine, she’s engaging, she didn’t mind keeping in touch when we were out and asked for recommendations. I dare say that this was our best holiday stay so far.
What could be improved: Only 1 thing, which was probably an oversight, there wasn’t any soap for the bathroom.
Closest shop is 15-20 minutes away. Host is selling wine, if needed.
