Hotel La Locanda
Volterra, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Hotel La Locanda? The location is absolutely perfect – I mean, Via Guarnacci is right in the heart of Volterra’s historic center, but it’s actually on one of the quieter streets. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the main piazza, but you don’t get the tourist crowds stomping past your window at all hours. The building itself has this wonderful old-world charm (it’s housed in a restored medieval structure), and honestly, the moment you step inside, you feel like you’ve discovered something special that most visitors just walk right past.
The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully updated – they’ve kept all the character you’d want from a place like this, with those gorgeous exposed stone walls and wooden beams, but everything actually works properly. The bathrooms are modern without feeling sterile, and I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet everything was at night. The beds are genuinely comfortable too, which… well, let’s just say that’s not always a given in these historic Italian hotels. What really impressed me was the attention to detail – fresh flowers in the lobby, local artwork on the walls, and the staff actually knows the town inside and out. The woman at reception gave me the best restaurant recommendation I got during my entire stay, some tiny place tucked away near the Roman amphitheater that I never would have found otherwise.
Here’s the thing about staying in Volterra – and this is where La Locanda really shines – you want to be inside the walls, not down in the newer part of town where some of the chain hotels are. From here, you can walk to the Etruscan Museum in five minutes, grab morning coffee at that little bar on Via Matteotti, and you’re perfectly positioned for those incredible sunset views from the city walls. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, but honestly, that’s not a problem when you’re surrounded by some of the best food in Tuscany. Plus, they do serve a proper Italian breakfast with excellent coffee, which is really all you need to start your day. The whole experience feels authentic without being stuffy – it’s got that 8.9 rating for a reason, and after staying there, I totally get why people keep coming back.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The air con wasn’t very good and our room on the top floor was quite warm.
What could be improved: Volterra was allowing traffic through it for roadworks, so unloading wasn’t especially easy, there was plenty of parking quite close at hand
What could be improved: Beds and pilllows were very uncomfortable for us. Both were very hard.
What could be improved: Parking is awful! Your bags can be dropped at the hotel and then you are free to find somewhere, you may, like us end up in the free car park which is a long trek back up some steep steps. Worth it though.
What could be improved: Nothing we did not like
The hotel itself is just inside the north gate to the town. Comfortable room and big bathroom. Nice secure garden behind the hotel to leave our bikes. The owner also has a restaurant in the main square where we had an excellent meal.
Our room was spacious and nicely decorated in white and cream fabrics with a big spa bath. We had a street view room, but it was quiet at night with almost no traffic. Breakfast was good. We liked Volterra town as it must be the highest located town in Tuscany with magnificent views of the Tuscan countryside.
What could be improved: I think the breakfast room could be a little bit more cozy - it is a bit clinical and bland.
