Villa Tolomei Hotel & Resort
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Villa Tolomei? It’s actually tucked away in this residential area called Marignolle that most tourists never see – about twenty minutes south of the Duomo, but honestly, that’s part of its charm. The moment you turn onto Via Santa Maria a Marignolle, you’re suddenly in this quiet, tree-lined neighborhood where locals walk their dogs and kids play in small piazzas. The hotel itself is this gorgeous renovated villa with honey-colored stone walls and cypress trees that make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a Tuscan postcard (I mean, technically you have, but it doesn’t feel staged).
The property sits on these sprawling grounds with actual gardens – not just a few potted plants, but real landscaping with olive trees and lavender that smells incredible in the evening. I loved how quiet it was here; you can barely hear traffic, just church bells from the nearby San Bartolo church and the occasional Vespa puttering by. The rooms have this elegant, understated vibe with antique furniture and marble bathrooms that actually feel luxurious without being over the top. Fair warning though – some of the older rooms can get a bit warm in summer since the building’s historic (the AC works, but it’s not arctic-level cold if that’s what you need). The pool area is probably where you’ll spend most of your downtime – it’s this beautiful infinity setup overlooking the Florentine hills, and the bar service is solid without being pretentious.
What really sets this place apart is how it bridges that gap between being in Florence but not overwhelmed by it. You’re close enough that a quick taxi ride gets you to Ponte Vecchio in fifteen minutes, but you can also just walk down to the village center in Marignolle for an authentic neighborhood aperitivo at places where you’ll be the only tourist. The hotel restaurant is actually worth eating at (rare for hotel food, honestly), especially their truffle dishes in fall, and the staff seems to genuinely know the area – they pointed me toward this little ceramics shop in nearby Impruneta that I never would have found otherwise. The 8.3 rating makes sense; it’s not perfect – the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, and breakfast service sometimes gets backed up during peak season – but there’s something really special about staying somewhere that feels authentically Tuscan while still having all the five-star touches. If you’re the type who wants to experience Florence like a local rather than just hit the major sights, this place gets it right.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The bathroom had an issue—water leaked onto the floor due to missing seals between the bathtub and the tiles. It clearly needs fixing.
The pool area felt a bit neglected: one of the showers was broken, electrical cables were scattered around the mobile bar, and there was no clear design plan for the flower arrangements. Also, pool towels weren’t laid out for guests, which was surprising given the setting.
What could be improved: Ac wasn’t working properly. You have to drive through very narrow streets to get to hotel. No elevator.
What could be improved: Lunch options and price for food/drink. We opted to walk off the property and had amazing food and drinks for 1/4 of the price
What could be improved: I was only concerned about the high temperature inside the hallways thinking that it must cost a fortune to the owner to pay the energy bills.
What could be improved: Everything was good, but the water heater for the shower need to be more strong to provide hat water especially in winter time.
What could be improved: I guess it's old fashioned. I'm sure it needs rewiring. We had power outages on our last morning but we were lucky as they clearly happen a lot. The TV isn't at all what would one would expect in a 5* hotel. The wifi is pretty poor and drops out. Don't eat there. I was shocked to find we were charged 20 euros for the cutlery (or for just sitting down)? My own meal was so bad that I left most of it. It's not a viable restaurant and a similar meal to my husbands would cost a quarter of the price in town. Obviously they had no proper chef and the food came out of the freezer. Not 5* stuff but then, what is? The dining room staff are East European (lovely, but I'm sure very exploited so what do you expect?) Everyone is clearly doing their best but I suspect the owners won't even read this.
What could be improved: Some areas of our room were a little tired for a 5*. But didn’t ruin our stay! Around the shower had a buoy of grime and mould, not what would be expected for a 5* However. The staff could be a little more attentive at Breakfast.
Would still recommend
The room was huge, bed was comfy and the breakfast was immense.
What could be improved: The shower head was very lacklustre but that is the only problem I could find in an amazing hotel
What could be improved: We were not able to adjust the heat. The hotel was under filled, and the hotel price was discounted when we were there, so we did not feel like we had a bargain.
