Sangaggio House B&B
Florence, ItalyYou know what hit me first about Sangaggio House? The fact that it’s tucked away on Via Cardinal Leopoldo – and I mean properly tucked away, not just “off the beaten path” like every other place claims to be. This street actually feels residential, which is honestly refreshing when you’re in Florence and half the historic center sounds like a perpetual tour group convention.
The building itself is one of those gorgeous Florentine townhouses that makes you wonder how people actually lived in these places centuries ago. The owners – and they’re definitely hands-on owners, not some faceless management company – have done something really smart here. They’ve kept all the character stuff (the original tiles in the entrance hall are incredible, by the way) but actually updated the things that matter for comfort. The rooms have proper air conditioning, which trust me, you’ll appreciate if you’re visiting between June and September when Florence turns into a beautiful brick oven. I stayed in the room facing the small courtyard, and it was blissfully quiet at night – no scooters revving up at 2 AM like you get on some of the busier streets closer to the Duomo.
What I really loved was how the breakfast setup felt more like being invited to someone’s home than staying at a typical B&B. They serve it in this lovely room with tall windows, and the spread is proper Italian – good coffee (obviously), fresh pastries from a local bakery, and they actually ask how you like your eggs instead of just pointing you toward a sad buffet warmer. The hosts know the neighborhood inside and out too, which is genuinely useful. They steered me toward this fantastic little osteria about three blocks away that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me the real scoop on which markets are worth visiting (spoiler: skip the touristy San Lorenzo one and head to Sant’Ambrogio instead).
Location-wise, you’re about a fifteen-minute walk to the main sights, but honestly that’s perfect. Close enough that you’re not spending half your day commuting, but far enough that you can actually breathe and feel like you’re experiencing Florence rather than just checking boxes. There’s a great little corner café right at the end of the street where locals actually go for their morning coffee – always a good sign. The Santa Croce area is literally around the corner, and that whole neighborhood has this more authentic vibe compared to the circus around the Ponte Vecchio.
The only minor thing I’d mention is that the stairs are typically Italian – meaning narrow and steep – so if you’re traveling with massive suitcases, maybe pack lighter. But honestly, that’s part of the charm of staying in a real historic building rather than some generic hotel chain. The 8.5 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it absolutely nails what a good B&B should be: personal, comfortable, and giving you a genuine taste of what it’s like to actually live in Florence for a few days.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: quite faraway from the city center and also from the nearest bus station. It was challenging to come back after 10.00PM
What could be improved: expectable traffic jam on weekdays
We got a free room upgrade just because the room was free, and the owner thought the other one would be nicer and more convenient for us.
The rooms were clean at any time.
It's a small family owned B&B with 6 rooms.
The breakfast buffet was great aswell and had everything that we needed (Homemade cakes Yummy!,2 kinds of sausage, 2 kinds of cheese, honey, jam, joghurts, tomato mozzarella, olives, 2 kinds of melons cherry's or other kinds of fruits, 2 kinds of juices, diffrent kind of coffee, 2 kinds of bread and a croissant. They will even make you eggs in whatever way you want them fresh in the pan, not like the disgusting scrambled eggs you get in big hotels.
You can choose if you want to eat your breakfast inside or on the cute terrace.
After talking a while with the owner and telling him what kind of things we like in vacations, he wrote us a list with over 30 places to visit in all of Italy. Which I appreciate a lot.
As a small present, we got a picture of the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore.
We felt very welcome at all times.
Thank you for your efforts to make it a great stay at your lovely place.
To add for the ones reading the reviews, the House is up a hill and the breakfast downstairs. So it's not accessible for people in wheelchairs or people with other walking disabilities.
Possibility for parking
Spacious and very clean rooms
Extremely friendly staff
Within walking distance of the historic city centre
Bus stop next to the hotel
We would love to go there again
