Villa Gobbi Benelli
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany, but Villa Gobbi Benelli actually surprised me. It’s tucked away in Corsanico-Bargecchia – and yeah, I had to look that up on the map too before my first visit – but honestly, that’s part of what makes it special. The villa sits on Via di Conca di Sopra, which sounds fancy but is really just this quiet residential street that winds up into the hills above Massarosa. Most tourists zoom right past this area heading to Lucca or the coast, which means you get this authentic slice of Italian life without the crowds.
The building itself has that weathered elegance you can’t fake – I mean, the Benelli family has been here for generations, and you can feel that history in the thick stone walls and the way the morning light filters through those tall windows. What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep the original character while actually making everything work properly. The wifi is solid (I’m a digital nomad, so this matters), the plumbing doesn’t make weird noises at 3am, and the air conditioning – well, let’s just say you’ll be grateful for it in July. The rooms feel genuinely lived-in rather than hotel-sterile, with these beautiful old tile floors that stay cool even when it’s blazing outside.
But here’s the thing that’ll make or break your stay: the location is both perfect and slightly inconvenient, depending on what you want. If you’re planning to explore the Garfagnana region or take day trips to places like Barga or Castelnuovo, this spot is actually ideal – you’re positioned perfectly for mountain adventures without being stuck in some remote village. The family knows all the hiking trails that don’t show up on tourist maps, and they’ll point you toward the best local restaurants (skip the obvious places in Lucca’s center and try Da Giulio instead). Parking is never an issue, which anyone who’s driven in Italian hill towns will appreciate. The downside? You’ll definitely need a car here – it’s not a walk-to-everything situation. The nearest train station is about fifteen minutes away in Viareggio, so if you’re planning to rely on public transport, this might not be your spot. Also, while the villa is peaceful most of the time, summer weekends can get a bit lively with Italian families – not rowdy, just… enthusiastic. I actually enjoyed the authentic atmosphere, but if you’re seeking complete silence, maybe visit during the shoulder season. The staff treats you like family rather than customers, which means lots of helpful suggestions and genuine care, but also a more relaxed approach to things like exact check-in times. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying longer than planned because leaving feels like saying goodbye to friends.
