FH55 Hotel Villa Fiesole
You know what hit me first about FH55 Hotel Villa Fiesole? The quiet. I mean, you’re technically still in the Florence area, but up here on Via Beato Angelico, it feels like you’ve escaped to a different century altogether. The hotel sits in this converted villa that’s got that weathered Tuscan stone thing going on – not the fake rustic stuff you see everywhere, but the real deal where you can actually feel the history in the walls.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to avoid the tourist chaos down in Florence proper but still be able to get there easily. There’s a bus that runs pretty regularly into the city center, though I’d recommend renting a car if you’re planning to explore the countryside (parking here is actually decent, which is saying something for this part of Italy). What really sold me on this place was stepping out onto the terrace in the morning – you get this incredible view that sweeps across the Arno valley, and on clear days you can pick out the Duomo and basically all of Florence spread out below you. It’s the kind of view that makes you understand why wealthy Florentines have been building villas up here since the Renaissance.
The rooms themselves are comfortable without being flashy – think elegant Italian furniture that’s actually meant to be used, not just looked at. Mine had these heavy wooden shutters that blocked out the light completely (a blessing if you’re dealing with jet lag), and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious with good water pressure. The staff genuinely seems to care about getting things right, which you don’t always find at four-star places. They helped me figure out the best times to visit some of the smaller churches in Fiesole when they wouldn’t be crowded, and their restaurant recommendations were spot-on – particularly this little place down near the Roman theater that I never would have found on my own. Speaking of food, breakfast here is solid Italian style with really good coffee and fresh pastries, though don’t expect a huge American-style buffet spread. The whole vibe is more intimate than that, maybe thirty or forty tables max, so you’re not fighting crowds for the good stuff. I’d definitely stay here again, especially in shoulder season when you can really appreciate how peaceful it gets up here in the evenings.
