Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort
Vicchio, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Villa Campestri? The smell. I mean, you’re driving up this winding road through the Mugello hills – about 40 minutes northeast of Florence if you’re coming from the city – and suddenly you’re surrounded by these ancient olive groves that seem to go on forever. The whole place actually smells like crushed herbs and that particular Tuscan earth scent that’s impossible to describe but somehow makes you feel like you’re exactly where you need to be. The villa itself is this gorgeous Renaissance building that’s been in the same family for generations, and honestly, it shows in the best possible way. Nothing feels forced or overly restored – more like you’re staying in someone’s incredibly elegant countryside home that just happens to have been around since the 1400s.
What really sets this place apart is how seriously they take their olive oil operation. I’m talking about a working farm here, not some decorative olive trees for atmosphere. During harvest season (usually October), you can actually watch the whole process unfold right outside your window, and the restaurant uses their own oil in everything – which, by the way, is some of the best I’ve tasted in Italy, and I don’t say that lightly. The rooms are scattered between the main villa and a few converted farm buildings, each one different but all maintaining that authentic Tuscan feel without being too rustic. My room had these massive wooden beams overhead and windows that opened onto the olive terraces, though I’ll mention the Wi-Fi can be spotty in some of the farther buildings – not necessarily a bad thing if you’re trying to disconnect. The restaurant is where this place really shines, serving dishes that change with whatever’s growing on the property or available from local farms. Their pici pasta with wild boar ragu is ridiculous, and they do this olive oil tasting that’s way more interesting than it sounds.
Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring the Mugello valley, which most tourists completely skip despite it being absolutely stunning. Vicchio itself is charming in that sleepy Italian village way – there’s a decent market on Thursdays and a couple of cafes where you can practice your Italian with locals who seem genuinely happy to see visitors. The drive to Florence is easy enough when you want city time, but honestly, I found myself wanting to stay put more often than not. Parking is never an issue here, the staff feels like they’ve been part of the landscape forever, and the whole experience manages to feel both luxurious and refreshingly unpretentious. If you’re looking for a pool party scene or tons of activities, this isn’t your spot – but if you want to experience working farm life in one of Italy’s most beautiful (and overlooked) regions while staying somewhere truly special, Villa Campestri delivers in spades.

What could be improved: Everything was super cool, no negative parts to describe
The farm was lovely for our toddler. We had no need to leave the property.
The pool was ideal for our teenage boys. They had it to themselves one evening mid week.
Gorgeous food in the evening, views are beautiful.
What could be improved: Nothing! We had a toddler with us and 2 days is enough for a quiet location. Just a note: The pool is deeper than my height 5ft5 and we was confined to the steps with the toddler which is fine, plus the property have shallow pool 500 meter walk away which is ideal for toddlers to paddle in.
What could be improved: The ac units used on the property are not efficient we had sleepless nights because it was sooo hot and yet we turned on the ac but the room was super hot still making it very uncomfortable for us to sleep from the heat and noise from the ac
What could be improved: Room was a little dark
What could be improved: A bit difficult to reach as everything only reachable by car.
What could be improved: Food portions were a little too large for the risotto and cooking class, perhaps for American tourists. Also our service dog had to be in a cafe in the restaurant rather than just a leash at our feet which felt a bit mean seeing as he is so quiet and well behaved. Also some of the communication was a bit bossy in tone. I felt a bit ordered about. However the lovely lady at the desk was so kind and also the massage was amazing. I think perhaps any tension was just from how busy they are, the chef Laura is a special talent and a lovely woman. I do recommend you experience it but book your activities in advance and only book the picnic on the day as if it rains it’s not ideal.
We had a beautiful room with a little outdoor area.
Breakfast was delicious and plentiful, and the evening meals were perfect. Can't wait to stay again.
