The Tuscanian Hotel
Lucca, ItalyYou know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to The Tuscanian Hotel on Via S. Anastasio – honestly, the street’s pretty narrow and I almost missed it. But then you step inside and it’s like… well, it’s one of those places that just gets Lucca right. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feeling that a lot of these renovated Italian hotels try for but never quite nail. I mean, you can tell they put thought into it without making it feel like a museum. The staff actually knows the neighborhood too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. When I asked about getting to the walls for my morning run, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward Porta San Pietro – he told me about the quieter entrance near Porta Elisa where there’s less foot traffic around 7 AM.
The rooms are solid – nothing fancy, but they’ve got that four-star comfort thing down without being stuffy about it. My room overlooked a little courtyard (which meant blissfully quiet nights, by the way) and the AC actually worked, which… let’s just say that’s not always a given in these old buildings during July. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious for an Italian hotel, and I loved that they didn’t go overboard with the marble-and-gold thing that makes you feel like you’re staying in a funeral home. What really won me over though was the breakfast setup – they do this spread in what feels like someone’s actual dining room, complete with local pastries that change based on what’s good that day. The barista makes proper cappuccinos, not the machine stuff, and there’s always fresh fruit from the market on Piazza San Michele.
Location-wise, you’re about a five-minute walk from the Duomo, maybe ten to Piazza dell’Anfiteatro if you take your time and duck into a shop or two. The thing is, Via S. Anastasio puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything but far enough from the main tourist drag that you don’t hear groups wandering around at midnight. I walked to dinner every night – there’s this little osteria on Via del Fosso that the concierge recommended, and she was absolutely right about their pici. Parking’s actually manageable if you’re driving; there’s a garage nearby and they’ll sort it out for you, though honestly, once you’re in Lucca’s center you won’t need your car anyway. The whole city’s basically made for walking, and the hotel gives you this perfect home base to explore from. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it nails that comfortable, authentic vibe that makes you want to come back – which, actually, I’m already planning to do next spring.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Having to leave!
What could be improved: Property good did not justify 260 euros a night
What could be improved: Air conditioning was very noisy as the fan constantly running at high speed. Not able to adjust in room even though controls available to do so. It did disrupt sleep
What could be improved: Was a bit expensive
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: We had a suite which we upgraded to and we loved the space. However, the lighting could have been better in the bathroom over / in the shower. It did appear very dark. The hairdryer in the bathroom was awful, in that you had to hold the button down for it to operate, which I understand for H&S reasons, but it was so weak power wise. I was supplied with a back-up very quickly, which was slightly better.
We had tea and coffee making facilities but no milk in the fridge. Became a nuisance having to ring down for stuff. We shouldn’t have had to for the upgraded room.
There is a CD in the room which didn’t work, but the radio did and was rather crackly.
Great location
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Honestly, I have zero to add. We enjoyed the entire stay.
