Casa del Campanaro centro storico di Lucca dentro le mura
Lucca, ItalyYou know what’s funny about staying in Lucca? Most people think they need to be outside the walls to get a good hotel experience, but Casa del Campanaro proves them completely wrong. I mean, this place is literally tucked into a narrow vicolo right next to the cathedral’s bell tower – and honestly, that’s exactly where you want to be.
The location is sort of ridiculous in the best way possible. You’re staying in what feels like someone’s elegant townhouse (which it probably was, centuries ago) in this tiny courtyard that most tourists walk right past without noticing. The cathedral bells do ring – I won’t lie about that – but it’s more charming than annoying, especially since they go quiet at night. What really gets me is how you can roll out of bed and be at the Duomo di San Martino in about thirty seconds, then wander over to Via Fillungo for morning coffee before the crowds even think about showing up. The whole centro storico becomes your backyard, which is pretty incredible when you think about it.
The building itself has that perfect balance of old-world character and actual comfort that’s surprisingly hard to find in historic Italian properties. The rooms – well, they’re not huge, but they’re thoughtfully designed with original details that feel authentic rather than staged. I particularly loved the way morning light filters through the windows, and you can actually hear the gentle hum of local life starting up each day. The staff really knows their stuff too; they’ll point you toward the best enoteca on Via del Battistero or tell you when the antique market sets up in Piazza San Giusto (third weekend of the month, in case you’re wondering).
What strikes me most is how this place gets the whole “living like a local” thing right without trying too hard. You’re not in some sterile hotel district – you’re in the actual heart of medieval Lucca, where real people still live and work. The narrow streets mean you’ll do a lot of walking, but that’s part of the charm. Plus, being inside the walls means you can easily bike the ramparts in the evening when the light gets all golden and magical. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle since you’re in the restricted zone, but they’ll sort you out with directions to the nearest spot – just ask when you book. Honestly, with a 9.5 rating, this place has figured out how to make historic accommodation work without sacrificing the things that actually matter to travelers. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special, even though plenty of smart visitors have obviously figured it out already.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Whoever stays on the 4th floor better enjoy walking up 3 floors of steps!! But our daughters got used to it. :)
The common area for the apartment is really a dining room, so don’t expect to be lounging together except when sitting at the large table. This was fine for us as we were always on the go.
What could be improved: Poor privacy. Kitchen is very small… but serviceable.
What could be improved: Everything was perfect!
The most important thing I very much wanted to mention, And give the upmost respect in the review, was Giulia!
From the moment we met her, our daughter’s immediately connected with her! The gentleness in her soul caused them to greet her with hugs. Our stay was 2 evenings, Giulia surprised them with puzzles at our door one morning.
We will miss Casa del Campanaro; however will miss Giulia even more! I want to thank the host for the honor of meeting her and the kindness of allowing us to enjoy their beautiful home.
buon Natale e Felice Anno nuovo.
