Palazzo Rocchi – Residenza D’Epoca
Lucca, ItalyYou know what really struck me about Palazzo Rocchi when I first walked into that lobby? The way the afternoon light hits those original frescoed ceilings – I mean, you’re literally standing in a 14th-century palace, and it doesn’t feel like some stuffy museum piece. The whole place has this lived-in elegance that’s honestly hard to find in Lucca these days, especially right on Piazza San Michele where most buildings have been chopped up into tourist shops.
The location is pretty much perfect if you actually want to experience the city rather than just photograph it. You’re maybe thirty seconds from San Michele in Foro (that’s the church with the crazy detailed facade that looks different every time you walk by), and Via Fillungo – basically Lucca’s main shopping street – is right there when you need actual stuff like a pharmacy or decent coffee that isn’t tourist-priced. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re dead center in the old town. These thick palace walls are no joke, and the piazza doesn’t get the late-night bar crowds like some other spots inside the walls. The staff actually knows the city too, which sounds obvious but trust me, it’s not always the case – they pointed me toward this little enoteca on Via del Battistero that I never would’ve found otherwise.
The rooms themselves feel authentic without being uncomfortable, if that makes sense. You’ve got original architectural details (my room had these gorgeous exposed beams), but the beds are properly modern and the bathrooms work like they should. The breakfast room overlooks a quiet courtyard that catches the morning sun just right – honestly, I spent way too much time there with my coffee just watching the light change on the old stone walls. One thing to know: if you’re driving, parking can be tricky since the hotel is well inside the ZTL (that’s the restricted traffic zone), but they’ll sort you out with directions to nearby parking and handle the permits. It’s actually easier than trying to navigate those narrow streets yourself. The whole experience feels like staying at a well-connected friend’s beautifully restored family palazzo – unpretentious but genuinely special, and you’ll find yourself taking different routes back each evening just to soak up more of the medieval atmosphere.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Could be noisy as the rooms are next to a busy Piazza
The elevator was great. Walked the stairs on our first arrival as I wasn’t sure what floor we were on.
Breakfast was quite nice.
What could be improved: I’d like better security on the rooms. Both rooms just had a plane old fashion key, but the suite had double doors that could be opened from the outside without a key. The bolt lock should be on the inside.
What could be improved: Bedroom was ok. Very comfortable and had all the amenities but shower was a bit basic and no daily top ups of water etc. Breakfasts were a bit random. You got given what they wanted to give you. We had scrambled eggs on toast one morning, simply put in front of us. It was lovely but we didn’t have a choice.
Only complaint would be the mattress was very thin and not comfortable. Also feels uncomfortable to use bedspread. Not knowing if it Was washed in-between clients? Or not? Would always prefer clean fresh sheets.
What could be improved: Everything was perfect. Was cloths are used in the US. Here not.
What could be improved: No shade on the terrace.
What could be improved: We would have preferred breakfast to be a buffet, but it is a small property. Probably only half a dozen to eight rooms. The hotel is on the 3rd floor and shared building with apartments.
I can’t thank the staff including Carlotta and her colleague who supported us when we got caught in the train strikes on Friday so didn’t arrive until after 10 pm
They kept in contact and stayed up late as our final train was cancelled and we had to get a taxi from Pisa
Thanks
