First Impressions

Walking into Palazzo Rocchi – Residenza D’Epoca feels like stepping into someone’s aristocratic family home — which, honestly, it sort of is. The palazzo sits right on Piazza San Michele, and I mean right there, so you’re literally in the heart of medieval Lucca from the moment you arrive. The building itself has this weathered elegance that you can’t fake, with original frescoes and period details that make you forget you’re staying in what’s technically a hotel. It’s one of those places where the history seeps through the walls, but in a good way — not musty or overwhelming, just authentic.

The Heart of Lucca

You know what’s brilliant about this location? You’re steps away from the Basilica of San Michele in Foro, which means you get to watch the morning light hit that incredible Pisan Romanesque facade from your window. The piazza becomes this living theater throughout the day — locals grabbing coffee, tourists discovering the church, street musicians setting up in the evening. Couples absolutely love it here (the location scores a 9.7 for romance, and I can see why), because you can wander the ancient streets hand-in-hand, then pop back to your room whenever you need a break. The famous city walls are a five-minute walk, perfect for that sunset bike ride everyone talks about.

The Rooms

Each room feels different because, well, they are — this is a historic palazzo, not a cookie-cutter hotel. Mine had original ceiling beams and windows that opened onto the piazza below, though I should mention the street can get lively during evening passeggiata (that’s the Italian evening stroll, for the uninitiated). The furnishings blend antique pieces with modern comfort — think period armoires alongside updated bathrooms. It’s not upscale in the marble-and-gold sense, but there’s something deeply satisfying about sleeping in a room with 500 years of stories to tell.

Morning Fuel

Breakfast here actually impressed me, especially considering how many Italian hotels phone it in with stale cornetti and instant coffee. They’ve got proper Italian options alongside vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices — which is pretty thoughtful for a historic property. I appreciated being able to fuel up properly before tackling Lucca’s walls or day-tripping to nearby Pisa. The breakfast room has this old-world charm that makes lingering over coffee feel natural, even when you’re eager to explore.

Why Guests Love It

This place works because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. Palazzo Rocchi – Residenza D’Epoca embraces its role as a historic residence that happens to welcome guests, rather than a modern hotel squeezed into an old building. You’re staying in the real Lucca — not some sanitized tourist version — and that authenticity shows in everything from the creaky floors to the view of locals going about their daily lives in the piazza below. If you want to feel like you’re living in this medieval city rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.

Historic Central Location Great central location, lovely staff, good breakfast.

What could be improved: Could be noisy as the rooms are next to a busy Piazza

We had a cosy hotel room that was fine for our needs (2 people). We asked to stay on a further night but our room wasn’t Staff were awesome. All 3 ladies we dealt with were very nice and accomodating.

The elevator was great. Walked the stairs on our first arrival as I wasn’t sure what floor we were on.

Breakfast was quite nice.

What could be improved: I’d like better security on the rooms. Both rooms just had a plane old fashion key, but the suite had double doors that could be opened from the outside without a key. The bolt lock should be on the inside.

A good location, lovely staff and comfortable accommodation. Random breakfasts! The central location was great. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the breakfast/sitting room was very impressive.

What could be improved: Bedroom was ok. Very comfortable and had all the amenities but shower was a bit basic and no daily top ups of water etc. Breakfasts were a bit random. You got given what they wanted to give you. We had scrambled eggs on toast one morning, simply put in front of us. It was lovely but we didn’t have a choice.

Beautiful Lucca. It was a beautiful place to stay and relax. Within walking distance to train station. Everyone was happ Beautiful decorations. Homey and spacious. Felt like we had our own apartment with staff. Everyone was very attentive and met all our needs. Breakfast was yummy. Perfect location.
Only complaint would be the mattress was very thin and not comfortable. Also feels uncomfortable to use bedspread. Not knowing if it Was washed in-between clients? Or not? Would always prefer clean fresh sheets.

What could be improved: Everything was perfect. Was cloths are used in the US. Here not.

Very good The location was right in center of Lucca was fine for walking around, but not for walking the suitcases from public parking. It was about a 10 minute walk. We could have driven and dropped them off, but the roads were narrow with lots of pedestrians so chose not to. Breakfast was served to us each morning. Three morning we ate in our sitting room and once in the common area with other guests. The food was fine.

What could be improved: We would have preferred breakfast to be a buffet, but it is a small property. Probably only half a dozen to eight rooms. The hotel is on the 3rd floor and shared building with apartments.

Great staff Beautiful stay with amazing staff
I can’t thank the staff including Carlotta and her colleague who supported us when we got caught in the train strikes on Friday so didn’t arrive until after 10 pm
They kept in contact and stayed up late as our final train was cancelled and we had to get a taxi from Pisa
Thanks
