The Place Firenze
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of Florence hotels, and The Place Firenze is honestly one of those spots that gets everything right without trying too hard. You know how most luxury hotels in historic city centers feel like they’re fighting against their building’s age? This one actually embraces it. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this perfect balance of old Florentine elegance and modern comfort that doesn’t feel forced or museum-like.
The location is what really sold me though – I mean, you’re literally on Piazza Santa Maria Novella, which sounds touristy but is actually where locals hang out too. The train station is right there (super convenient if you’re doing day trips to Siena or Pisa), but once you’re inside, you’d never know. The piazza itself has this great energy in the evenings when people gather around the fountain, and honestly, watching that scene from the hotel’s upper floors with a glass of wine became my nightly ritual. What I really appreciated was how walkable everything becomes from here – the Duomo is maybe a 10-minute stroll through streets that aren’t completely packed with tour groups, and you can actually get to the Oltrarno neighborhood pretty easily on foot.
The rooms themselves… well, they’re what you’d expect from a place with a 9.4 rating, but it’s the details that matter. The beds are seriously comfortable (I’m picky about this), the bathrooms have that perfect water pressure you never quite get at home, and the AC actually works – which, if you’ve been to Florence in July, you know is not a given. The staff seems to genuinely know the city, not just the standard tourist recommendations. When I asked about finding good leather goods away from the San Lorenzo market chaos, the concierge sent me to this workshop near Santo Spirito that I never would have found otherwise. Check-in was smooth, no weird holds on my credit card, and they stored my luggage without any fuss when I arrived early. The only minor thing – and I’m being really nitpicky here – is that some of the street-facing rooms can get a bit noisy in the mornings when the market vendors are setting up, but honestly, that’s just Florence being Florence. You’re staying in the heart of a living city, not a sanitized resort bubble, and that’s exactly what makes this place special.
