Castelfalfi

You know what’s funny about Castelfalfi? I’d driven past those weathered stone walls along Via Castelfalfi dozens of times without realizing there was this incredible resort hiding behind them. It’s one of those places that feels like a secret – tucked away in the rolling hills between Florence and Pisa, where the cypress trees create these perfect postcard lines against the sky. The whole property is actually built around a medieval village, and I mean really built around it – they’ve restored the original borgo so carefully that you’re essentially staying inside a piece of Tuscan history.

The rooms are something else entirely. Mine was in one of the converted farmhouses, and honestly, the way they’ve blended modern luxury with those thick stone walls and original beams… it’s like sleeping in a museum, but actually comfortable. The bathroom had this massive soaking tub that looked out over the vineyards, and yes, there are actual working vineyards right there – you can smell the grapes during harvest season in September. What really got me was the silence at night. I mean, complete silence except for the occasional owl or church bells from nearby Montaione drifting across the valley. The Wi-Fi works perfectly (important for those of us who can’t completely disconnect), but you sort of forget to check your phone anyway.

The golf course is what originally put this place on the map – it’s one of those championship layouts that winds through the countryside, and even if you’re not into golf, the clubhouse restaurant does this incredible wild boar ragu that locals drive up from Volterra for. Speaking of food, they’ve got their own olive oil production right on site, and the chef at La Rocca actually uses it in pretty much everything. The pool area gets busy during peak summer months, but there’s this quieter infinity pool near the spa that most guests never find – it’s tucked behind the main building with these panoramic views that stretch all the way to San Gimignano on clear days. Parking is never an issue here (unlike some Tuscan hotels I could mention), and the staff genuinely seems to know every hiking trail and hidden wine cellar within a thirty-kilometer radius. It’s the kind of place where a 9.7 rating actually makes sense – not perfect, because perfection is boring, but pretty damn close to what you’d want from a luxury escape in the Tuscan hills.
