You know what hit me first when I pulled up to Bagni Di Pisa? The sheer elegance of this place – it’s tucked away on Largo Shelley (yes, named after the poet who actually lived in this area), and honestly, you’d drive right past it if you weren’t looking. But once you’re inside, it’s like stepping into this perfectly preserved piece of Tuscan aristocracy. The lobby has this warm, lived-in grandeur that doesn’t feel stuffy at all – marble floors that have actually been walked on for centuries, not some modern imitation.

The thermal spa is the real star here, and I mean, this isn’t your typical hotel spa situation. These are genuine thermal springs that have been bubbling up from deep underground for thousands of years. The Romans knew what they were doing when they built their first baths here. The water comes out naturally hot – around 37°C – and has this almost silky feel because of all the minerals. I spent way too much time in those pools, but honestly, after driving through Tuscan hill towns all day, it was exactly what I needed. The spa area itself is beautifully integrated into the historic architecture, so you’re soaking in these ancient waters while surrounded by original frescoes and vaulted ceilings.

The rooms – well, they’re properly spacious with high ceilings and actual character, not that cookie-cutter luxury hotel vibe. The staff genuinely knows the area too – they pointed me toward this little osteria in San Giuliano Terme that I never would have found otherwise. Location-wise, you’re about 20 minutes from Pisa (perfect for avoiding the tourist crowds but still hitting the major sites), and maybe 30 minutes to Lucca, which is absolutely worth the drive. Parking is handled by the hotel, which saves you the headache of navigating those narrow Italian streets with a rental car. The whole experience feels like you’re staying at some cultured Italian friend’s family estate – if your friend happened to have access to healing thermal waters and a Michelin-level restaurant. It’s pricey, sure, but for a special occasion or when you want to properly unwind, it delivers in ways that go beyond just nice linens and good service.
