Terme Di Venturina
Campiglia Marittima, ItalyYou know what caught me off guard about Terme Di Venturina? I was expecting just another thermal spa hotel – you see them all over Tuscany – but this place actually has some serious character. It’s tucked away on Via Delle Terme, which honestly feels more like a quiet residential street than somewhere you’d find a 4-star hotel, and that’s kind of the point. The building itself has this lovely weathered elegance, not shiny and new, but in that good way where you can tell it’s been welcoming people for decades.
The thermal waters here are the real deal – I mean, this isn’t some manufactured spa experience with imported minerals. These are natural hot springs that locals have been using since, well, probably Roman times if we’re being honest. The water has this slight sulfur smell that takes about five minutes to get used to, but once you’re in those pools, especially in the evening when the crowds thin out, it’s genuinely therapeutic. I watched this elderly Italian couple who were clearly regulars – they had their own little routine, moving between different temperature pools like they’d been doing it for years. The outdoor thermal pool stays open pretty late, which is perfect because there’s something magical about soaking in hot mineral water under the stars.
What I really appreciated was how unpretentious everything felt. The rooms are comfortable without being flashy – mine had this great little balcony overlooking the gardens, and the bathroom actually had decent water pressure (you’d be surprised how often that’s an issue in older Italian hotels). The staff genuinely seems to care about the place, not just going through the motions. At breakfast, this one server – older guy with a great mustache – remembered I liked my cappuccino extra hot after just two days. Small thing, but it matters.
Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute walk to the town center of Venturina Terme, which is sleepy but charming. There’s this fantastic little trattoria called Da Mario (locals will point you there) that serves incredible wild boar ragu – definitely worth the short stroll. If you’re driving, parking is actually easy here, unlike some places along the coast. You’re also perfectly positioned for day trips to Piombino or even the ferry to Elba, though honestly, once you settle into the rhythm of the thermal baths, you might not want to venture far.
The 8.4 rating makes sense to me – it’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be. This is the kind of place where you come to genuinely relax, not to Instagram every corner. The thermal facilities close for cleaning between 1-3 PM, which initially annoyed me until I realized it forced me to actually explore the area or take a proper siesta. Sometimes the best hotels are the ones that slow you down rather than speed you up.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Dinner in the restaurant was very good but expensive.
Food in the restaurant was very tasty with a good breakfast selection.
Even though they were very busy due to the Tuscany trail bike event the staff were very polite and friendly and accomodating.
Room and bathroom were a good size.
It's close to the terme.
What could be improved: The waitresses at breakfast improved, but still you get asked the room number but not what you want to drink, except once. I don't know how else to say it.. it's annoying.
What could be improved: I would have liked a larger bed and newer pillows. Also longer hours for the pool to be open as it was so nice in the evening…but closed at 7pm
What could be improved: Spa at surcharge. Not possible to charge electric car. No restaurant.
The access to the Hotel gives also accesss to all the thermal pools, internal and external.
If you want to go to have therapeutic treatments like mud, etc, then you can cross the internal road and be there, so it's very convenient (please note nothing is included there anyway).
What could be improved: I have to say that for being a 4 star and the requested prices, these are sub-par: rooms are basic (our terrace was nice and big but with just 2 chairs), breakfast is good, but if you are a child.. 90% sweets (I wonder elderly people do not have glicemic issues there 🤷🏻♂️), service ok-ish, but they only ask you the room number when you enter for breakfast, not what you want to drink (it's the little things and attentions that matter).
One thing... You will find lots of complaints about the moquette in the rooms and corridor on Booking... it's there to damp the noise, so it's good!).
The building is also more modern than I thought.
Breakfast was a bit disorganised, it was a buffet style but we had to ask for everything as there were only cakes available. Once we have asked the helpful staff provided what we have asked for
What could be improved: I wasn't satisfied with the pool towel charge. I was charged for the towels at the front desk for the first day then I was told that no more charges will required. When I went to the pool I was asked again for money for towel hire. There were calls to the main reception and a lot of talking. At the check out it was implied to me that we have not returned the towels. I felt somehow unconfortable being accused of stealing the pool towels. No information about the pool towels was given to us at the check in. Apparently we could have just use the room towels and avoid the 10 euro daily charge.
What could be improved: Breakfast didn't correspond to a 4 star hotel (little variety, few fresh food).
The pillows weren't comfortable.
What could be improved: a little too spartan
