Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort – The Leading Hotels of the World
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of fancy places, but Terme di Saturnia is honestly in a league of its own – and I’m not just saying that because it’s part of Leading Hotels. The drive up to this place through the Tuscan countryside already sets the mood, winding through those rolling hills dotted with olive groves until you reach Saturnia proper. You know what hits you first? The sulfur smell from the natural springs, which might sound off-putting but actually becomes this weirdly comforting signature of the whole area.
The hotel itself sits right where you’d want it to be – close enough to those famous free thermal pools at Cascate del Mulino (about a 10-minute walk if you’re feeling adventurous) but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the crowds of day-trippers taking selfies at all hours. I mean, don’t get me wrong, those cascades are incredible and totally worth the trek, but there’s something to be said for having your own pristine thermal pools without someone’s Instagram photoshoot happening three feet away. The resort’s spa facilities are absolutely phenomenal – they’ve got this indoor-outdoor thermal pool situation where you can float around at 37°C while looking out over the Maremma landscape, and honestly, I could’ve spent my entire stay just doing that.
What really sets this place apart though is how they’ve managed to feel both luxurious and genuinely Italian. The staff actually knows the area – ask them about the best time to visit the nearby hill towns like Pitigliano or Sorano, and you’ll get real advice, not just whatever’s in the tourist brochure. The golf course is surprisingly good too (18 holes designed by Ron Kirby), though I’ll admit the thermal waters were way more my speed than chasing a little white ball around in the Tuscan heat. Food-wise, they’ve got this restaurant that sources a lot locally – the wild boar is incredible, and their wine selection leans heavily on Maremma producers, which is exactly what you want. Check-in was smooth, parking is included (which isn’t always a given at these places), and the rooms are spacious with those marble bathrooms that make you feel like you’re living in a Roman villa. The only minor thing I’d mention is that it can get pretty busy during peak season, especially around the thermal areas, so if you’re looking for total serenity, maybe aim for shoulder season. But honestly, even with other guests around, the property is large enough that you can always find your own quiet corner to soak and unwind.
