Sanlucchese 3
Poggibonsi, ItalyLook, I’ll be straight with you about Sanlucchese 3 – it’s one of those places that sounds fancy on paper (five stars and all that), but when you actually get there, you realize it’s more about the experience than the sparkle. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, but it’s got this comfortable, lived-in feeling that honestly works better than some of those sterile luxury places where you’re afraid to touch anything.
The thing about staying in Poggibonsi is that most people just pass through on their way to San Gimignano or Siena, but if you actually stop and spend a night, you get this whole different perspective on Tuscany. The hotel sits right in the heart of things – you can walk to that little market on Via Trento where the locals actually shop, not the tourist traps. And honestly, the staff here gets that. They’re not trying to upsell you on some wine tour every five minutes; they’ll just casually mention that the best gelato is at that place around the corner (which, by the way, closes at 8 PM sharp, so don’t wait around). The rooms are solid – good beds, decent shower pressure, and you know what I really appreciated? The windows actually open. Seems basic, but you’d be surprised how many hotels seal you in with their climate control. You can hear the church bells from Santa Maria Assunta in the morning, which sounds romantic but actually becomes your natural alarm clock.
Here’s the thing though – that 7-out-of-10 rating makes sense when you’re there. It’s not perfect, and I think that’s sort of the point. The breakfast spread is good but not overwhelming, the lobby has this slightly worn elegance that feels authentic rather than renovated to death, and parking… well, you’ll figure it out. It’s Italy, after all. But what really got me was how the place connects you to the real Poggibonsi. You’re not in some resort bubble; you’re in a working Tuscan town where people have actual lives beyond tourism. The hotel reflects that – it’s comfortable and welcoming without trying too hard to impress. If you’re looking for Instagram-perfect everything, maybe look elsewhere. But if you want to wake up, grab a coffee, and wander through streets that haven’t changed much in decades, then walk to catch a bus to Volterra or drive the back roads to Colle di Val d’Elsa, this place gets it right. It’s the kind of hotel that works because it knows what it is, and more importantly, it knows what you’re really here for.
