Sanlucchese 1
Poggibonsi, ItalyLook, I’ll be honest with you – when I first pulled up to Sanlucchese 1 in Poggibonsi, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. I mean, it’s got that five-star rating, but the overall guest score of 7.3 had me wondering if maybe the stars didn’t quite align with reality, you know? But here’s the thing about this place – it’s actually one of those hidden gems that’s sort of caught between worlds in the best possible way. You’re technically in Poggibonsi, which honestly most people just pass through on their way to San Gimignano or Volterra, but that’s exactly what makes it work. The hotel sits in this perfectly quiet pocket where you can actually hear the church bells from the old town in the morning, and there’s this incredible view of the Tuscan hills that you’d pay twice as much for in Siena.
What really got me was how the staff – especially this older gentleman at the front desk, I think his name was Marco – knew exactly which local spots to recommend. Not the touristy places, but like this tiny osteria about ten minutes’ walk away where they make the most incredible pici pasta. The rooms themselves are proper luxury – marble bathrooms, those impossibly comfortable Italian linens, and thank god, really good air conditioning (trust me, you’ll need it in summer). But it’s the little touches that made me realize why this place has five stars, even if some guests might be tough critics. The breakfast spread includes honey from local beehives, and they actually make fresh cornetti every morning instead of just heating up frozen ones like so many places do.
The parking situation is actually pretty decent – there’s a proper lot, not just street parking where you’re playing musical cars with the locals. And here’s something I didn’t expect: the pool area is genuinely beautiful, with these olive trees providing just enough shade, and it never felt crowded even though we were there in late June. I think maybe the 7.3 rating comes from people expecting ultra-modern amenities, but honestly, the charm here is more understated luxury. It’s the kind of place where you can walk to the weekly market on Thursday mornings, grab some pecorino and prosciutto, and feel like you’re actually experiencing Tuscany rather than just passing through it. If you’re looking for a base to explore the region without dealing with the crowds and prices of the famous hill towns, this place delivers in ways that surprised me.

What could be improved: The information on how to find the property needs improving. It would be worth mentioning that it is a little further on from the Dog centre Centro Cinofilo Cinopolis which has good signage from the main road, so would make it much easier to find. The put you up beds in the sitting area are not comfortable to use as sofas, they could be helped by having some big cushions to support your back, or even better, replaced by proper sofas. A hairdryer would be useful, plus bigger bath towels and more than one tea towel. Courtyard needs a gardener to clear away the weeds which would make the property look much better. Its a big place, but cleaning could have been better. It wouldnt take much to make Sanlucchese 1 an even more lovely place to stay.
Bellissima vista e posizione
Ampi spazi
