Residenza D’Epoca Al Numero 8
Florence, ItalyYou know what caught me off guard about Residenza D’Epoca Al Numero 8? It’s tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street in San Frediano, and honestly, I walked past it twice before spotting the discreet entrance. The whole area feels like the Florence your Italian grandmother would have known – none of the tourist chaos from around the Duomo, just locals heading to the morning market and old men playing cards outside the corner bar.
The building itself is this gorgeous 15th-century palazzo that’s been converted into a boutique hotel, and they’ve done it right. I mean, you can still see the original frescoed ceilings in some rooms, but they’ve actually managed to fit modern bathrooms without destroying the character. The rooms are all different – mine had these massive wooden beams and windows that opened onto a quiet courtyard where you could hear church bells in the distance, not traffic. Fair warning though: if you’re used to American-sized hotel rooms, these feel more intimate. It’s part of the charm, but pack light.
What really sold me on this place was the staff – they’re not just friendly, they actually know the neighborhood. The woman at reception sent me to this tiny trattoria three blocks away where I had the best ribollita of my life, and she was right when she said to avoid the tourist trap on Via Santo Spirito. The breakfast situation is simple but good – fresh pastries from a local bakery, proper espresso, and you can eat in this little courtyard garden that feels like a secret. The whole San Frediano district is having this moment right now – it’s where young Florentines are opening wine bars and vintage shops, but it hasn’t been completely discovered yet. You’re a five-minute walk from the Oltrarno’s artisan workshops and maybe ten minutes to cross the Ponte Vecchio, but you’re staying somewhere that actually feels like Florence, not a museum. The 8.5 rating makes sense – it’s not perfect (the WiFi can be spotty, and there’s no elevator), but it’s got that authentic Italian hospitality thing down perfectly.
