La Torre del Cestello – Residenza d’epoca
You know what? I’ve walked past La Torre del Cestello dozens of times over the years, always wondering what it was like inside that beautiful historic building on Via Borgo San Frediano. Well, I finally got my chance to stay there last spring, and honestly – it’s one of those places that gets the balance just right between authentic Florentine charm and actually being comfortable.
The location is pretty much perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Florence rather than just visiting it. San Frediano is still a real neighborhood – you’ll hear actual Italian conversations at the morning coffee bars, not just tourist chatter. The Oltrarno area has this lovely, slightly bohemian vibe that the more touristy parts of Florence have lost. You can walk to Santo Spirito square in about three minutes (great for evening aperitivo, by the way), and crossing the river to the Duomo takes maybe ten minutes on foot. I mean, you’re close enough to everything that matters, but far enough from the cruise ship crowds that you can actually breathe.
The building itself is genuinely historic – you can feel it in the thick walls and the way the floors settle under your feet. It’s a residenza d’epoca, which basically means they’ve preserved the period character while adding modern necessities. The rooms have this wonderful sense of space and light that you don’t get in newer hotels. My room had these gorgeous high ceilings with original frescoes (a bit faded, but that’s part of the charm), and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious. The bed was actually comfortable too – not always a given in historic Italian hotels, if we’re being honest. One thing to note: the building is old, so you’ll hear some creaking and settling at night, but it’s more atmospheric than annoying.
What really won me over was the staff’s approach – they treated the place like their own home and genuinely seemed to care about making sure guests experienced Florence properly. The woman at reception gave me the best restaurant recommendations I’ve ever gotten (there’s this tiny trattoria around the corner that’s not in any guidebook), and when I mentioned I was interested in local artisans, she actually walked me over to introduce me to a leatherworker who has a workshop two streets over. That kind of personal touch is getting rare these days.
The breakfast setup is simple but done well – fresh pastries from a local bakery, good coffee, and they’ll pack you something to go if you’re heading out early. No giant buffet, but honestly, who needs that? The whole experience feels more like staying at a sophisticated friend’s place than a commercial hotel. Given that it’s pulling an 8.7 rating, I’d say most people are figuring out what I did – sometimes the best luxury is just being somewhere that feels real and genuinely welcoming.
