Relais Stibbert Florence
Florence, ItalyLook, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Relais Stibbert Florence being in the Careggi-Rifredi area, I was a bit skeptical. It’s not exactly where most tourists plant their flags, you know? But after spending a few nights there, I actually think that’s what makes this place special. You’re about 15 minutes from the chaos of the Duomo crowds, tucked away in a neighborhood where actual Florentines live their lives.
The hotel itself sits on Via Lambruschini, which is this quiet residential street that feels worlds away from the tourist madness downtown. What struck me immediately was how the staff actually seemed to care – not in that overly rehearsed way you get at chain hotels, but genuinely. The woman at check-in told me about this little trattoria around the corner that doesn’t even have a sign, just locals who’ve been going there for decades. That’s the kind of insider knowledge you can’t Google, honestly. The rooms have this understated elegance that works really well – think classic Florentine touches without trying too hard. My room faced the garden (ask for one if you can), and mornings there were surprisingly peaceful. You’ll hear birds instead of Vespas, which is… well, it’s pretty rare in Florence.
Here’s what I really appreciated: the Careggi area has this authentic neighborhood feel where you can grab your morning coffee at bars where you’re the only tourist. There’s a decent bus connection that gets you to Santa Maria Novella in about 20 minutes, or you can walk to the historic center if you don’t mind a half-hour stroll – I actually enjoyed it most evenings, especially heading back after dinner when the streets thin out. The hotel staff knows all this stuff and doesn’t make you feel stupid for asking. Parking is actually manageable here too, which anyone who’s driven in Florence will tell you is basically a miracle. The breakfast was solid – nothing revolutionary, but good local pastries and proper coffee. I mean, you’re in Italy, so the coffee’s going to be good anyway, but still. One small thing that bugged me was the Wi-Fi could be spotty in some corners of the building, but honestly, that forced me to actually disconnect a bit, which wasn’t the worst thing. The 4-star rating feels right – it’s comfortable and well-run without being flashy. That 8.5 rating makes sense when you factor in the value and the fact that you’re getting a more authentic slice of Florence life while still being close enough to hit all the tourist spots when you want to.
