Relais Riserva di Fizzano
Castellina in Chianti, ItalyYou know what hits you first when you pull up to Relais Riserva di Fizzano? It’s not just another converted villa – though it absolutely is that, and a gorgeous one. It’s how quiet everything gets once you turn off the main Castellina road. I mean, you’re literally five minutes from the town center, but suddenly you’re surrounded by nothing but olive groves and that particular Chianti silence that makes you understand why people move here and never leave.
The whole place feels like someone’s incredibly stylish aunt decided to open her estate to guests, which honestly might not be far from the truth. The rooms have this perfect balance of rustic Tuscan charm without any of that heavy, dark furniture that can make some agriturismos feel like museums. My room had these old terracotta floors that were cool under bare feet even in August, and the bathroom – well, let’s just say it’s clear they spent money on the renovation. The view from most rooms looks out over the Riserva di Fizzano nature area, which is basically rolling hills and vineyards as far as you can see. During grape harvest season (September-ish), you can actually watch the workers in the fields from your window.
What really sets this place apart is the location within Castellina’s landscape. You’re positioned perfectly for day trips – Siena’s about 20 minutes if you take the back roads through Fonterutoli, and honestly, that drive alone is worth the stay. The staff seems to actually know the area, not just the standard tourist spots. They pointed me toward this tiny osteria in Radda that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me the real scoop on which wineries are worth visiting versus which ones are just tourist traps. Parking is never an issue here, which anyone who’s driven around hilltop towns in Tuscany will appreciate – no circling narrow medieval streets looking for a spot. The pool area gets busy around 3 PM when families come back from sightseeing, but early mornings you’ll have it to yourself with just the sound of cicadas and maybe a church bell from town. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re planning to walk into Castellina proper for dinner, it’s definitely doable but it’s uphill on the way back – not a big deal during the day, but after a good Chianti dinner, well, you might want to drive or call a taxi.

Hotel is perfect location of Tuscan climate. Is located in the place of old village. There is everything starting from pool and ending to small church. We were in rook which in close location is lieaving swallows. Surrounded with wineyards located in close location to San Gimigiano and Monteriggioni. I recomend this very much and if it will be possible I will return.
What could be improved: -
What could be improved: Road to the property not really good. We had an apartment on the second floor without balcony. no coffee maker, taking into account that you can’t find anything nearby it’s really uncomfortable. Check out really early at 10 AM. breakfast might be better.
The rooms are classic and authentic Italian style, we had a deluxe room where you had a little outdoor terrace. There were on the property also other outside cute sitting areas. Breakfast was good, but simple. There is a laundry facility for a price of €6 a token, what is handy for washing towels and clothes with a longer stay.
What could be improved: For us the price/quality was too high. During our holiday we stayed at other hotels where we payed much less, but got more comfort. The accommodation is big with an appartement with kitchen. But for the price we payed we did expected some basic equipment like shampoo/conditioner, toilet paper for the whole week (now only for 2 days) and some oil/salt in the kitchen. Now for 5 days we had to buy this ourself. Cleaning is once a week, just as towel and bed sheets renewal. For us all not a problem, but again for the price we payed compared to other stays, we thought then a bit too expensive.
That being said: we did stay in an appartement with only the two of us so we can imagine price quality is better when you stay with more people or kids.
And we had a lovely stay.
Breakfast included was a great start to the day. The two bedroom apartment had two lovely bedrooms and a bathroom and kitchen. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
What could be improved: Nothing to dislike. Suggestion for visitors… Definitely a place to have your own transport to make it easy to go to supermarkets and visit the many medieval towns surrounding us.
