Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Via del Massonero, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The address didn’t give much away, and you know how sometimes these villa rentals can be hit or miss. But actually walking into this place? Complete game changer. It’s tucked away in Vaglia, which is about 20 minutes north of Florence if you’re driving (and yeah, you’ll want a car here – trust me on that one). The whole setup is basically a section of this gorgeous villa that’s been converted into its own little retreat, complete with a private pool that honestly made me question why I ever book regular hotels anymore.

What really got me was how quiet it is up there. I mean, you’re still close enough to zip into Florence for dinner – the locals actually prefer the evening drive because you skip most of the tourist traffic – but you wake up to nothing but birds and maybe the occasional Vespa puttering down the hill. The pool area is where you’ll spend most of your time, and it’s positioned so you get morning sun but aren’t completely baked by 2 PM (which, if you’ve been to Tuscany in summer, you know is crucial). The whole place has this lived-in elegance that you can’t fake – thick stone walls that actually keep things cool, shutters that work properly, and none of that sterile vacation rental feeling you sometimes get. There’s even this little herb garden that previous guests have clearly been maintaining, which sounds cheesy but actually adds to the whole experience when you’re making coffee in the morning.

The practical stuff matters too, and this place gets it right. Parking is right there – no dragging luggage up medieval stairs or wondering if your rental car will fit down some narrow alley. The check-in was refreshingly simple, and the owners clearly know their stuff about what travelers actually need (decent Wi-Fi, proper water pressure, places to hang wet swimsuits). You’re about 10 minutes from the center of Vaglia where there’s a solid little restaurant that does incredible pici all’aglione, and maybe 15 minutes from some hiking trails that most tourists never find. I spent one afternoon just walking through the olive groves nearby – the kind of afternoon that makes you understand why people move to places like this and never leave. For the price point and the fact that you’re getting your own slice of villa life without the full villa price tag, it’s honestly one of those finds that makes you want to keep it to yourself. Just don’t visit in August unless you love crowds – even up here, you’ll notice the difference when Florence empties half its tourists into the surrounding hills.
