Palazzo Bianchini
Florence, ItalySo I’ve stayed at Palazzo Bianchini a few times now, and honestly? It’s become my go-to whenever I’m in Florence. The thing is, it sits right in San Lorenzo – you know, that neighborhood most tourists rush through to hit the market without really exploring. But Via del Canto dei Nelli is actually this quiet little street that feels completely removed from the chaos, even though you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Duomo.
The palazzo itself is… well, it’s gorgeous in that understated Florentine way. I mean, you’re not getting over-the-top luxury here, but the bones of this place are incredible – those high ceilings with original frescoes, marble floors that have this perfect worn patina, and these massive wooden doors that make you feel like you’re stepping into someone’s private residence rather than a hotel. The staff genuinely remembers you, which is rare these days. Last time I was there, Marco at reception asked about my work project from six months earlier. The rooms vary quite a bit – some overlook the internal courtyard (which is blissfully quiet), while others face the street. The street-facing ones get more light but you’ll hear the occasional Vespa in the morning, though honestly, that’s part of the Florence experience.
What I love most is how they’ve managed to keep the authentic feel without skimping on the stuff that actually matters. The beds are properly comfortable, the WiFi works everywhere (crucial when you’re trying to work remotely), and the bathrooms have been updated without looking like they belong in a chain hotel. The breakfast happens in this beautiful room with windows overlooking a tiny garden – nothing fancy, but the coffee is properly Italian strong and they do this thing with fresh pastries from a bakery around the corner on Via Nazionale. You know what’s really smart? They partnered with a garage about two blocks away for parking, which saves you the nightmare of driving in centro storico. And here’s something I only figured out on my third visit – ask for a room on the second floor if you can. The ceilings are higher and you get better light, plus you’re not dealing with street noise but you’re not hiking up too many stairs with luggage.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Florence rather than just visiting it. San Lorenzo has this amazing morning energy – locals grabbing coffee, vendors setting up the market, students heading to class. By evening it quiets down considerably, but you’re still close enough to walk to dinner in Santa Croce or across the river in Oltrarno. I’ve brought friends here who were skeptical about staying outside the main tourist zone, and they always end up loving how authentic it feels. The 9.2 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does, it does really well.

What could be improved: Everything was great
What could be improved: Nothing to dislike.
There are many restaurants nearby, and whilst some can be a bit touristic, there was wonderful food to be had at many of them.
The apartment was charmingly furnished with older antique items that really set off the charm and decor of the rooms. There is stunning trompe-l'oeil painting throughout, which gives an old-world charm and artistry to the place. The location and "disguise" of the kitchenette was perfect, as it was available, yet out of the way. There is plenty of storage in the apartment, and there is aircon (to be fair, we only needed the aircon one afternoon, but it did work very well). Even the chocolate on the pillow was delicious.
What could be improved: Our only problem with the apartment is one that is likely fixed at this point. The shower in our bathroom was brand new, and had not been "user tested" so to speak. We could not regulate the temperature of the shower -we even asked the host to assist, and the building technician, and we were all unable to get it sorted. As it would be difficult to get in a technician in a timely manner, Matteo offered us to use the shower in another apartment, which helped the situation immensely. It was an inconvenience, to be sure, but it was a perfect solution to a surprise issue. Obviously, there has since been time to get in a technician to sort it, so I imagine it to not be an issue any longer.
As for the apartment, my wife said she wanted to live there forever. It was a perfect size for the four of us (a big king bed in the bedroom and a nice foldout double in the sitting room.
The apartment feels like you've walked into a beautiful movie set for a Florentine novel from the last century, but with all the modern conveniences we expect today. Everything about it is superb. It even has a little sectioned off kitchen area where we made our simple breakfasts of grapefruit, yogurt, and fresh berries from a nearby market. Charming in every way.
The owner and others we interacted with (Saman!) were so great to work with, answering questions promptly and helping us in every way they could.
I can't say enough good about this place. We'll definitely be recommending it to family and friends--and hopefully returning some day.
What could be improved: Be aware that everywhere you stay in Italy is required to collect a city tax. This has nothing to do with the apartment, but don't let it surprise you. It's generally a few euros per person per night, but the amount seems to vary by city. Just plan that into your expectations.
What could be improved: Everything was great! The host Matteo made himself available and Saman was helpful. Matteo offered to provide additional suggestions around Florence if needed.
The location was very convenient, and I had a great stay.
Whenever I had a question, I could easily reach out via WhatsApp, which made me feel at ease.
The kitchen was equipped with basic seasonings, so it was also convenient for cooking.
What could be improved: If I had to mention one thing, there is no elevator due to the historical nature of the building.
