L’Albero Di Gamelì
Chiusi, ItalyYou know what hit me first about L’Albero Di Gamelì? The name itself – it’s got this poetic quality that actually matches the place perfectly. Tucked away in Chiusi’s Giovancorso area, this isn’t one of those cookie-cutter hotels you stumble across in tourist zones. I mean, you’re literally staying in a residential neighborhood where locals go about their daily business, which honestly makes the whole experience feel more authentic.
The building has this understated elegance that screams “we don’t need to show off” – and with a 9.3 rating, they really don’t. What I loved most was how the staff seemed to actually know the area inside and out. When I asked about getting to the Etruscan tombs (which, let’s be honest, is probably why you’re in Chiusi anyway), they didn’t just point me toward the obvious tourist trail. They told me about the quieter entrance near Via Porsenna and mentioned the best time to visit when the light hits the underground chambers just right. That kind of local insight is gold when you’re trying to experience a place rather than just photograph it.
The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in quality without feeling worn down – if that makes sense. Everything works properly (the Wi-Fi actually functions, thank god), but there’s character in the details. The windows in my room opened onto this little courtyard where you could hear the genuine sounds of Italian life – neighbors chatting, someone practicing piano, the occasional Vespa puttering by. It’s the kind of ambient noise that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than in a sterile hotel bubble. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven through Tuscan hill towns will appreciate. The breakfast spread was solid – not Instagram-worthy, but the kind of proper Italian breakfast with good coffee and pastries that actually taste like something.
What really sets this place apart is its position as a launching pad for exploring the area. You’re close enough to walk into Chiusi’s center in about ten minutes, but far enough from the main drag that you’re not dealing with tour bus noise at 7 AM. The staff clued me in on this little enoteca just off the main square where locals actually drink – not the touristy spots with English menus plastered outside. And here’s something I didn’t expect: they knew about the seasonal stuff too. Apparently, if you’re there in late spring, there’s this incredible local festival in the nearby frazione that most guidebooks completely miss.
Look, L’Albero Di Gamelì isn’t trying to be the flashiest place in Tuscany, and that’s exactly why it works. It’s the kind of spot where you feel like you’ve discovered something rather than just booked something. The 4-star rating feels accurate – comfortable and well-run without being pretentious about it. If you want to experience Chiusi like someone who actually lives in the area rather than just passing through, this is your place.

What could be improved: Stairs were steep into the house and to our room, plus there was a large brick step to get into our bathroom. Location is on a busy street about 1.5 km from the nearest town.

What could be improved: Advice to Kiwis/ Aus - take a junction block with an adapter as most stone properties have minimal plug sockets
