La Monastica Resort & Spa
Borgo a Buggiano, ItalyYou know what struck me first about La Monastica? It’s tucked away on this quiet little street – Via Santa Scolastica – that most people driving through Borgo a Buggiano would completely miss. I mean, you’re in this charming Tuscan hill town that honestly feels like it hasn’t changed much in centuries, and then you stumble upon what used to be an actual monastery that’s been transformed into something pretty extraordinary. The whole place has this incredible sense of history – you can still see some of the original stonework and arched walkways – but they’ve managed to blend it seamlessly with modern luxury without making it feel fake or overdone.
What really gets me is how they’ve handled the spa aspect. Look, I’ve been to plenty of hotel spas that feel like afterthoughts, but here it actually makes sense because, well, monasteries were always about contemplation and retreat, right? The treatment rooms are built into these old stone chambers, and there’s this amazing indoor pool that feels almost cave-like but in the best possible way. The whole property is surprisingly intimate – it’s not one of those sprawling resorts where you need a map to find your room. Parking is actually pretty straightforward (which, if you’ve driven in rural Italy, you know is not always a given), and the staff seems to genuinely know the area. They pointed me toward this little osteria about ten minutes down the hill that I never would have found otherwise, and honestly, it ended up being one of my favorite meals of the trip.
The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a place with a 9.8 rating – beautifully appointed with that perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort. Mine had these thick stone walls that kept everything blissfully cool even in July, and the bed was one of those where you actually don’t want to get up in the morning. What I didn’t expect was how quiet it is at night – I mean, Borgo a Buggiano isn’t exactly a bustling metropolis, but even so, the acoustics of the old building seem to just absorb sound. The breakfast situation is solid too, with a nice mix of local specialties and the usual suspects, served in this gorgeous room with views over the surrounding hills. If you’re planning to visit, I’d honestly recommend avoiding the peak summer months if you can – not because it’s not lovely, but because you’ll have the place more to yourself in late spring or early fall, and the weather’s actually perfect for exploring the thermal baths in nearby Montecatini. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay, which is probably the highest compliment I can give any hotel.

Guest Reviews
La Monastica is, without a doubt, the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. The resort is like a secret garden unfolding across different levels—each terrace revealing new corners of serenity, from elegant pools to peaceful towers and cozy nooks perfect for unwinding while taking in the breathtaking views.
The staff—Michela, Elena, Paola, and the entire team—embody true hospitality. Their attentiveness, warmth, and kindness are something truly rare and unforgettable. They made our stay not just comfortable, but genuinely heartwarming.
The spa is a haven in itself. From the soothing massages to the jacuzzis enhanced with facial masks, every detail is crafted to melt away stress and wrap you in calm. The atmosphere is luxurious yet grounding—pure bliss.
Devoti Restaurant deserves its own standing ovation. Set within a beautifully restored old church, the ambiance alone is magical. But the food—every single dish—was a revelation. This wasn’t just a meal; it was a culinary journey that left a lasting impression. The kind of dining experience you’ll tell stories about for years to come.
And the breakfast? Absolutely divine. Every morning felt like a celebration—so fresh, so flavorful, so perfectly done. Truly, it couldn’t have been more perfect.
Visiting La Monastica was a dream come true. It set a new standard for beauty, comfort, and hospitality that will be hard to match.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the entire team. You’ve given us memories we will treasure forever.

We’ll be back for sure, words cannot describe this place enough!
It's new but very, very clean and well maintained. Has amazing views from rooms, very nice staff who does even more than asked(they helped to make us a romantic dinner on the outer terrace which isnt used for dinners, thanks Paula). Dinner and breakfasts were really good, pools features epic views and just pools worth the price paid for stay there.
This place also relatively close to train, so you can stay here instead of staying in Florence as its just ~1h train to Florence
Also it has real medieval clock tower on its territory, so you can go and see/touch it in person
Good restaurant and breakfast.
Amazing receptionists and hotel manager.
Lots of attention to details.
