Holiday Home Il Borgo Degli Agrumi
You know what struck me first about Il Borgo Degli Agrumi? The name actually makes sense when you’re standing there – you can literally smell the citrus groves that still dot this part of Tuscany. It’s tucked away on Via Alessandro Bardelli, which honestly I’d never heard of before booking, but turns out to be this quiet residential street in Uzzano where you’ll hear more birds than car engines. The whole setup feels like someone converted a traditional Tuscan home into guest accommodations, and they did it really thoughtfully. I mean, you’re getting that authentic stone and terracotta vibe without feeling like you’re sleeping in a museum. The rooms have this perfect balance – old-world charm but with proper air conditioning (trust me, you’ll want that in July) and surprisingly good WiFi. What I loved was how they kept original details like the exposed beams and tile floors, but the beds are actually comfortable and the bathrooms work properly. Small thing, but the shower pressure was excellent.
The location is sort of perfect if you want to explore this region without dealing with tourist crowds. Uzzano itself is tiny – maybe fifteen minutes to walk the whole historic center – but you’re positioned really well for day trips. Montecatini Terme is basically next door, and you can reach Lucca or even Florence pretty easily by car. I actually preferred staying here over the busier towns because evenings were so peaceful. The family running the place clearly knows the area inside and out; they gave me restaurant recommendations I never would have found otherwise, including this incredible little trattoria about ten minutes away where locals actually eat. Parking was no problem at all, which honestly can’t be said for most places in Tuscany. The whole property has this relaxed, residential feeling – you’ll probably see neighbors tending their gardens and maybe catch the scent of someone’s dinner cooking nearby.
What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail that you only get when owners actually care about their guests’ experience. The 9.6 rating isn’t just because everything looks nice in photos – it’s because they’ve thought through the little things that make a stay memorable. Fresh fruit from local orchards in the kitchen area, suggestions for hiking trails that most tourists never discover, that kind of thing. The check-in was smooth and personal, none of that rushed hotel lobby feeling. And honestly, the value is exceptional for what you get – this level of accommodation and hospitality would cost significantly more in Florence or Rome. If you’re looking to experience authentic Tuscan life rather than just photograph it, and you want a peaceful base for exploring the region, this is exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble across but rarely do.
