You know what really caught me off guard about La Magione dei Todaro? I was expecting just another decent hotel in one of those little Tuscan towns you pass through on your way to somewhere else, but this place actually has some serious character. It’s right there on Piazza Pretorio – which, honestly, is about as central as you can get in Borgo a Buggiano without being in someone’s living room. The building itself has that weathered stone look that screams “I’ve been here since before your great-grandfather was born,” and when you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that the Todaro family (yeah, it’s actually family-run) genuinely cares about the place.

What I loved most was how they’ve managed to keep the historical bones of the building while making everything actually functional for modern travelers. The rooms have these gorgeous old ceiling beams and thick walls that keep things blissfully quiet – important since you’re literally in the town square where the locals do their morning coffee ritual. I mean, you’ll hear the occasional Vespa puttering by, but it’s more charming than annoying. The beds are properly comfortable too, not those rock-hard things you sometimes get in “authentic” Italian hotels where they think suffering builds character. And the bathrooms – well, they’re small but beautifully done with local stone work that feels luxurious without being pretentious.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore this part of Tuscany without fighting crowds. Borgo a Buggiano sits in this sweet spot between the more touristy hill towns and the thermal springs area around Montecatini, so you can walk to a couple of really good local restaurants (the one just down from the piazza does incredible wild boar ragu) and use it as a base for day trips. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – the streets around here were definitely designed for horses, not rental cars – but the hotel staff will sort you out with directions to the nearest spot. They’re the kind of people who remember your name after one conversation and will actually give you useful local tips instead of just pointing you toward the obvious tourist traps. With a 9.4 rating, clearly other people have figured out what makes this place special too, but it still feels like a bit of a hidden gem tucked away in the Tuscan countryside.

We enjoyed the fireplace with lots of dry wood so that it was easy to light a cosy fire. You need a good care to get up the steep and narrow road, but then the view is breathtaking. Everything you need in the kitchen to cook.

Beautiful location in a tiny hamlet on top of a hill overlooking the plains of Tuscany. Very quiet, with only noise from the clock tower, which didn't quite chime the hour! We were met to hand over the keys, even though it was quite late in the evening. If we had any questions they were always answered promptly via WhatsApp. It's a great place to explore some of the hills - fantastic for cycling and walking.

Location is wonderful - in a small village on a hilltop, with a terrific view of hills and countryside. The style / atmosphere of the property and the village were very charming. While the property is simple rather than luxury, everything you need is there and works. The team who look after the property were great - very responsive and helpful.

There's very little I didn't like, the place was so divine that it greatly overshadowed the little things I didn't like. The location makes this place, tucked between a church and an old nunnery, nestled on a hilltop with spectacular views. It's exactly what you imagine for a picture postcard Tuscan stay. We had a gorgeous terrace full of plants to enjoy the evenings and our meals, bring mosquito spray they are very aggressive. Very very cozy lodgings, and very quiet. A nice area to walk around as well. See the church next door if you get a chance. The kitchen was well equipped. I highly recommend this place. Also a great location to explore the nearby towns, montecatini Terme, Vinci and Pistoia, Florence and other cities can be reached by train from Montecatini. An amazing deal for what we paid.
