Il Salviatino Firenze
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Il Salviatino? It’s this gorgeous 15th-century villa that sits up on a hill in the Campo di Marte area – honestly, I almost missed the turnoff on Via del Salviatino because you’re winding through these residential streets that don’t exactly scream “luxury hotel.” But that’s actually perfect, because once you pull up (and yes, they handle parking, which is a godsend in Florence), you realize you’ve stumbled onto something pretty special. The building itself is this restored Renaissance villa with these incredible frescoed ceilings and original architectural details that make you feel like you’re staying in someone’s very elegant ancestral home rather than a hotel. I mean, the lobby area has this intimate, lived-in quality that you just don’t get at those big chain properties down in the centro storico.
What really sets this place apart – and I’ve stayed at quite a few hotels in Florence – is how it manages to feel both grand and genuinely comfortable. The rooms are spacious (something you definitely can’t take for granted in this city) and they’ve done this beautiful job of mixing period pieces with modern amenities. The bathrooms are particularly impressive, with these deep soaking tubs that actually fit a normal-sized person. But here’s the thing about the location that took me a while to appreciate: you’re about a 15-minute walk from the Duomo, which initially felt far, but it turned out to be this perfect sweet spot. You get these stunning views over the city and olive groves from the hotel grounds, plus you’re close enough to walk to Sant’Ambrogio market in the mornings – which, honestly, is where the locals actually shop and grab coffee, not those touristy spots around Piazza della Signoria. The staff seemed to really know their stuff too; they pointed me toward this little osteria called Il Cibrèo that I never would have found otherwise, and it ended up being one of my best meals in the city.
The pool area is where you’ll probably spend your afternoons if you’re visiting in warmer months – it’s got this serene, almost monastery-like quality with views that make you forget you’re in a major city. I will say the rooms on the garden side are quieter, though honestly, even the city-facing ones weren’t too noisy since you’re elevated above the street level. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving after 3 PM because they seem to really need that time to get rooms ready properly. The breakfast is quite good – they do this nice mix of Italian pastries and international options, and you can eat outside on the terrace when weather permits. Look, it’s definitely a splurge, but if you want something that feels authentically Florentine without sacrificing comfort, and you don’t mind being slightly outside the immediate tourist bubble, this place delivers in a way that justifies that 9.3 rating.

What could be improved: The fact that we had to leave :(
What could be improved: The only thing I’d like to see improved is the pool area and to have a section which is properly heated - it was a lovely temperature for adults in the sun but too cold really for our 18 month old.
