Il Rosolaccio
San Gimignano, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Il Rosolaccio? It’s actually tucked away in this tiny hamlet called Capezzano, which honestly, most tourists racing toward San Gimignano’s famous towers completely miss. I mean, you’re literally five minutes from all that medieval chaos, but the moment you pull up this winding road to the hotel, it feels like you’ve discovered some secret corner of Tuscany that the crowds haven’t found yet. The whole place sits on this gentle hillside with olive groves stretching in every direction – and I’m talking about working groves, not some manicured hotel landscaping. You’ll hear the church bells from San Gimignano drifting across the valley in the evening, but during the day it’s just birds and maybe a tractor puttering around in the distance.
The hotel itself has that effortless Italian charm that’s hard to fake – stone walls that actually feel old, not Disney-old, and rooms that manage to be genuinely comfortable without trying too hard to impress. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night (no AC units humming or highway noise), plus they’ve got this terrace where you can sit with a glass of wine and watch the light change on San Gimignano’s towers as the sun sets. The staff clearly knows the area inside and out – they steered me toward this little osteria in Pancole that I never would have found otherwise, and when I mentioned wanting to avoid the tour bus crowds, they told me exactly when to hit the main sites. Parking’s easy here too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate a rental car through San Gimignano’s narrow streets will appreciate. The breakfast spread was pretty solid – local cheeses, proper Italian coffee, and they actually had decent fruit instead of those sad hotel buffet offerings you get sometimes.
Honestly, with a 9.1 rating, I expected it to be good, but what surprised me was how… well, how un-hotel-like it felt. It’s more like staying at someone’s really well-appointed country house, if that someone happened to have excellent taste and a knack for hospitality. The whole Capezzano area feels authentically Tuscan in a way that some of the more famous spots have sort of lost – you’ll see actual farmers heading to work in the morning, not just tourists with cameras. If you’re planning to explore the Val d’Elsa region (and you should, because there’s so much more than just San Gimignano), this makes a perfect base. Close enough to walk into town for dinner, far enough away that you can actually sleep peacefully and wake up to views that haven’t been Instagram-ed to death.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Dinner: it was good but I would appreaciated more tipical tuscany food
What could be improved: It was a bit overpriced. It was hard to negotiate the unfamiliar narrow roads in the evenings, so we stayed in our apartment, and because the kitchen facilities were amazing we had a lovely time.
What could be improved: Not a single thing
The pool location was like an infinity pool into the countryside. The side patio a sun trap and perfect nook for getting lost in a good book.
What could be improved: We are out most evenings, but on the evenings we stayed in, the set dinner seemed a little pricey for what was on offer.
