Il Poggio B&B
Scandicci, ItalyYou know what? Il Poggio B&B is one of those places that sneaks up on you. I mean, you’re driving through the Tuscan countryside about 20 minutes from Florence, and suddenly there’s this charming stone building tucked into the hillside at Via del Poggio 10 in Ginestra – honestly, if you blink while winding through those narrow roads, you might miss the turn entirely. The hosts actually gave me their cell number because GPS gets a little confused out there, which tells you something about how they treat guests.
The thing that struck me immediately was how quiet it gets at night. Like, properly quiet – none of that city hum you don’t realize you’re used to until it’s gone. The rooms have this authentic Tuscan feel without being overly rustic (I’ve stayed in places where “authentic” meant uncomfortable, but not here). The beds are actually good – firm enough that you don’t sink into oblivion but soft enough that you sleep well. And the breakfast? Well, let’s just say the homemade jam situation is serious business. The owner, Maria, makes this fig jam that I’m still thinking about months later. She also knows exactly which local bakery delivers the best pastries, and honestly, starting your day with proper Italian coffee and fresh cornetti while looking out over olive groves is pretty hard to beat.
What really makes this place work is the location – you’re close enough to Florence that you can easily drive in for dinner (parking near the Oltrarno district is way easier than people think), but far enough out that you feel like you’re experiencing actual Tuscany, not tourist Tuscany. The nearby village of Scandicci has this little market on Thursdays where locals shop, and there’s a family-run restaurant about 10 minutes away that doesn’t even have a proper sign – just ask Maria for directions to “the place with the wild boar.” The 8.1 rating seems about right, actually – it’s not luxury hotel perfect, but it’s got that homey authenticity that makes you want to extend your stay. The only minor thing is that the WiFi can be spotty during busy periods, but honestly, that might be a feature rather than a bug when you’re trying to disconnect from everything. If you’re looking for that sweet spot between genuine Italian hospitality and actual comfort, this little B&B delivers in a way that bigger hotels just can’t match.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: A sign at the main road would be helpful, especially if you arrive in the dark.
What could be improved: The only thing which was a negative was that there was no way for us to prepare an evening meal. As we didn't have a vehicle (our son dropped us off and went to his family's accommodation), we had to make do with the little food we were carrying. Other than that, the place was good.
What could be improved: The approach road to the farmhouse was a bit precarious in places.
What could be improved: Seasonal issue: Restaurant close by was closed. Dining options in towns within walking distance were somewhat limited
What could be improved: Maybe furnitures were a bit outdated but it still value for money.
The breakfast was very good with local products
