Il Battistero Siena Residenza d’Epoca
Siena, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Il Battistero? The location is absolutely wild – I mean, you’re literally steps from the Baptistery of San Giovanni, which honestly most tourists rush past on their way to the Duomo. But staying right there means you get these incredible early morning views before the tour groups descend around 9 AM. The building itself is this gorgeous historic palazzo that feels properly Sienese, not like some chain hotel trying to fake authenticity. When I walked into the lobby, there was this subtle smell of old stone mixed with something floral – maybe jasmine from the courtyard? The staff actually remembered my name after the first day, which… well, that doesn’t happen often at four-star places.
The rooms have this perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort that’s harder to pull off than you’d think. My room had these thick stone walls (which meant blissfully quiet nights, even during Palio season when the city goes absolutely mad), and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious for a medieval building. I loved the little details – like how they’d restored the original ceiling beams but added proper lighting underneath so you could actually read at night. The Wi-Fi was solid too, which I mention because historic buildings in Siena can be hit or miss with connectivity. One thing to note: if you’re staying during summer, the stone keeps things naturally cool, but winter nights can get chilly – pack accordingly or ask for extra blankets.
What really sets this place apart is how it feels like a local secret hiding in plain sight. The breakfast room overlooks a tiny side street where you’ll see actual Sienese heading to work, not just tourists following red umbrellas. Speaking of breakfast – it’s not elaborate, but the pastries come from a bakery about two blocks down Via di Città, and the coffee is properly strong. The concierge (I think his name was Marco?) gave me the best restaurant recommendations, including this little osteria in Contrada della Tartuca that I never would have found otherwise. You’re a three-minute walk from the Campo, but you avoid the chaos of staying right on the main tourist drag. Plus, there’s actually a small parking arrangement they can set up if you’re driving – and trust me, you want help with parking in Siena’s medieval maze. At 8.9 rating, it’s clearly doing something right, and after staying there, I get why people keep coming back.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The room had a spiral ladder (which led to nowhere) in the centre that was dangerous to navigate when going to the bathroom late at night in the dark.
The staff was very friendly.
What could be improved: Nothing

What could be improved: In Siena, there are a lot of hills and walking. Because of the ZTL zone, you have to park quite a way away and then bring your luggage to the hotel. It wasn't a bad walk, but it is something to be aware of.
What could be improved: The parking situation was kind of a trouble and it was so far from the hotel. If you just take a carry on it might be ok.
What could be improved: The breakfast, which was poor. Mind you, we were earlier than they wanted, but the freshness and choice was substandard.
What could be improved: The associated Bistro/Caffe was not great. The staff were not at the same level as the accommodation & the restaurant, consequently we did not use it much. The staff were a little off at times and I even heard one of them refer to customers as 'The Walking Dead'! There are so many caffès and restaurants in Siena it wasn't a concern but was enough to leave an impression!
All the staff were super friendly and made you feel welcomed.
The hotel is in a great location, although all Siena is very walkable. Quiet at night, we heard no street noise (room 3)
We also got super lucky as the Giro d'Italia finished in Siena on the day we arrived; it was an amazing experience.
We'd recommend this hotel and will return.
