Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Siena over the years, but La Terrazza Sul Campo hit different – and honestly, the name tells you everything you need to know. When they say “sul campo,” they mean it. You’re literally on Via di Città, which is one of those narrow medieval streets that winds its way directly toward Il Campo, Siena’s famous shell-shaped piazza. I mean, you can practically roll out of bed and be sipping morning coffee watching the early light hit the Palazzo Pubblico’s tower.

The thing about this place is that it gets the balance right between being authentically Sienese and actually comfortable for modern travelers. The rooms have that solid, lived-in feel you want in a historic building – thick walls that keep things cool even in July, original details that remind you you’re sleeping in a piece of history. But they’ve also figured out the practical stuff that a lot of these old palazzos mess up. The bathrooms work properly, the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and honestly, the beds are really good. I slept better here than I did at some fancier places up in Florence. The “rooms only” part means no restaurant downstairs, but you know what? That’s actually perfect because you’re surrounded by some of the best food in Italy. There’s this little enoteca called Osteria Le Logge just around the corner that locals actually go to, not just tourists.

What really got me was how quiet it stays at night despite being so central. Via di Città gets its foot traffic during the day – tourists heading to the Duomo, locals doing their shopping – but once evening settles in, it’s just the sound of footsteps on stone and maybe some distant conversation drifting up from the street. During Palio season (that’s July and August, if you’re planning), things get more animated, but even then it’s more festive than disruptive. The staff here actually knows their stuff about navigating Palio craziness, which is worth its weight in gold if you’ve never experienced it. And parking – God, parking in Siena is usually a nightmare, but they’ll sort you out with directions to the closest spots where you won’t get towed. Small thing, but it matters when you’re dragging luggage up medieval streets. This isn’t the kind of place where you’ll spend much time in your room anyway – you’ll be out exploring those incredible contradas, getting lost in the maze of streets, maybe catching sunset from the terrace of the Santa Maria della Scala museum. But when you do come back, tired and probably a little wine-drunk from dinner, you’ll be really glad you chose somewhere that feels like a proper Sienese experience rather than some generic hotel that could be anywhere.

We had a PHENOMENAL stay at this beautiful apartment. It was a very special stay as my Husband and I were getting married in the Palazzo Pubblico and stayed here the night before. Viola and her team went out of their way to make our stay special, giving us free breakfast in another property and letting us use the apartment for a celebration after the ceremony with our family and friends. This was the most special stay I think we've ever had and I cannot wait to come back on our anniversary. Thank you Viola so much for everything. Ella and Bryan
