Hotel Spadai
You know that feeling when you stumble onto a street in Florence and think “wait, this can’t be real”? That’s exactly what happened when I first walked up to Hotel Spadai on Via dei Martelli. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Duomo – like, you can actually see Brunelleschi’s dome from some of the upper floor windows – but somehow this little stretch feels quieter than the chaos around Piazza del Duomo.
The building itself is one of those gorgeous Florentine palazzos that makes you wonder what stories these walls could tell. When you walk in, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cared about the restoration – the original frescoes are still there, but they’ve been paired with modern touches that don’t feel forced or trying too hard. The lobby has this warm, lived-in elegance that honestly makes most boutique hotels look like they’re trying way too hard. What really struck me was the staff – they’re the kind of people who remember your name after one night and can tell you which gelato place on Via de’ Cerretani has the shortest lines (trust me, this matters in summer).
The rooms are what you’d hope for in a place like this – not massive by American standards, but thoughtfully designed with these beautiful terracotta floors and windows that actually open (a dying art in hotels these days). The beds are seriously comfortable, and the bathrooms have this perfect mix of modern functionality with period details. I stayed in August, which can be brutal in Florence, but the AC worked perfectly and the thick walls kept things surprisingly quiet despite being on such a central street. Here’s the thing though – parking is basically impossible around here, so if you’re driving, you’ll want to use one of the garages near Santa Maria Novella and just walk the ten minutes over. But honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need a car anyway. You can walk to the Uffizi in about eight minutes, hit the Mercato Centrale for lunch, and still be back for an afternoon nap before the evening crowds hit.
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both special and unpretentious at the same time. The 9.5 rating isn’t just because everything works (though it does) – it’s because staying here feels like you’re experiencing Florence the way it should be experienced, not like you’re just passing through. The morning light streaming through those tall windows, the sound of the city waking up below, the way the concierge casually mentions that the best time to visit San Lorenzo is right when it opens at 10 AM – these are the details that make a trip memorable. It’s not cheap, but for what you get and where you are, it actually feels like good value, especially if you book outside of peak season.
