Hotel Number Nine
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Hotel Number Nine? The fact that it’s tucked away on this narrow medieval street that most tourists completely miss, even though you’re literally a three-minute walk from the Duomo. I mean, Dei Conti Street is one of those cobblestone lanes where you can actually hear your footsteps echo off the ancient walls – pretty magical when you’re rolling your suitcase over those stones at sunset.
The building itself is this gorgeously restored 15th-century palazzo, and honestly, they’ve nailed that sweet spot between historical charm and modern comfort. The lobby has these original frescoed ceilings that make you crane your neck like you’re in the Sistine Chapel, but then there’s perfectly functioning WiFi and USB ports exactly where you need them. My room (I stayed there twice, actually) had this incredible view over the rooftops toward Santa Maria Novella – you can see the church’s geometric marble facade from certain angles, which is pretty spectacular when the morning light hits it just right. The beds are legitimately comfortable too, not just hotel-marketing comfortable, and the AC actually works during Florence’s sweltering summer months.
What really sets this place apart is the location knowledge you get from the staff. They’ll tell you to hit the Mercato Centrale around 11 AM before the cruise ship crowds arrive, or which osteria on Via del Trebbio serves the best ribollita (it’s the one with no English menu, by the way). The concierge recommended this tiny gelato spot on Via dei Tavolini that I never would’ve found otherwise – locals were literally lining up there while tourists queued at the overpriced places near the Ponte Vecchio. Parking is tricky in this area, like everywhere in Florence’s centro storico, but they’ve got arrangements with a garage about five minutes away, and they’ll actually coordinate the whole thing for you instead of just handing you a map and saying “good luck.”
The breakfast situation is solid – not one of those sad continental spreads, but proper Italian coffee (they use local roaster Ditta Artigianale beans) and fresh pastries from a nearby bakery. You eat in this beautiful courtyard garden that feels like a secret hideaway from the crowds already gathering outside. I actually ended up spending extra time there each morning just people-watching and planning my day, which tells you something about how relaxing the atmosphere is. The whole hotel runs quietly too – you’re not dealing with slamming doors or elevator dings all night, even though the building is pretty full most of the time.
Look, Florence has no shortage of luxury hotels, but most of them either feel like generic international chains or they’re so obsessed with being “authentic” that they forget about basic comfort. Hotel Number Nine gets both sides right – you’re sleeping in a piece of Renaissance history, but your shower has proper water pressure and your room stays cool in August. Plus, you’ll spend less time figuring out where to go and more time actually enjoying the city, which is worth a lot when you only have a few days in Florence.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Pick your room wisely, if possible not on the street as very noisy at night even on a high floor. Some staff are a bit abrupt but it might be a cultural difference.
What could be improved: The decor in the hallways is a little tired, the breakfast was not amazing.
What could be improved: Nothing
Part of a Private member club with a Friday music night - v good fun, nice atmosphere
Lovely steam rooms / hammam area - felt fantastic after an hour in there
Very comfortable large bed
Congenial and friendly staff - very hospitable and lovely people
What could be improved: Temperature control in shower stuck (on relatively hot temperature for me)
Safe not working - broken door
For me the layout / decoration / fixtures / fittings and therefore atmosphere didn’t hit the mark - very eclectic and mad but not elegant with it, slightly rabbit warren internally - Suspect I’m not target market (51F). Didn’t feel the level of luxury I would expect at the rate I paid (and have paid in other Florence hotels)
What could be improved: Nothing I can think of actually
