Castello Di Vicarello
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Castello Di Vicarello, I thought it might be one of those places that sounds amazing online but turns out to be all style and no substance. Boy, was I wrong. This place is tucked away in the hills near Sasso d’Ombrone, which honestly most people zip past on their way to more famous Tuscan destinations, but that’s exactly what makes it special. You’re getting the real Maremma experience here, not the tourist-packed version.
The castello itself is this beautifully restored medieval structure that doesn’t feel like a museum – I mean, you can actually imagine people living here centuries ago. The rooms have that perfect balance of historic character and modern comfort, though I should mention the Wi-Fi can be spotty in some of the tower rooms (comes with the territory when you’re dealing with stone walls that are probably three feet thick). What really got me was the attention to detail – they’ve got this incredible wine cellar where they do tastings, and the staff actually knows their stuff about the local Morellino di Scansano wines. You know what surprised me most? The silence. Once the sun goes down, all you hear are crickets and maybe the distant sound of wild boar rustling around in the olive groves.
The food situation is pretty fantastic too – they source most everything from their own estate or neighboring farms, so you’re getting ingredients that were literally picked that morning. The breakfast spread includes their own honey, olive oil, and cheese, plus this incredible bread that’s still warm when they bring it out. Parking is easy (thank god, because navigating those narrow country roads with a rental car is stressful enough), and they’re super helpful with directions to places like the thermal baths at Saturnia or the coast at Castiglione della Pescaia – both about a 45-minute drive but totally worth it. The staff has this relaxed, genuine warmth that you don’t always find at fancier places, and they seem to actually enjoy chatting about the area’s history and hidden gems. Sure, it’s not cheap, but when you’re sitting on their terrace at sunset with a glass of their estate wine, watching the light fade over the Tuscan hills, you sort of forget about the price tag. This is the kind of place where you’ll find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even checked out.
