Hotel Mulino di Firenze – WorldHotels Crafted
Florence, ItalyYou know what caught me off guard about Hotel Mulino di Firenze? The name literally means “mill,” and when you walk into the lobby, you actually get why they chose it. There’s this industrial-chic vibe going on – exposed beams, weathered stone, the kind of thoughtful design that feels authentic rather than trying too hard. I mean, Florence has no shortage of hotels playing up the Renaissance angle, but this place on Via Villamagna takes a completely different approach, and honestly, it works.
The location is sort of perfect if you know Florence at all. You’re in the Oltrarno area, which – let’s be real – is where you want to be if you’re not interested in fighting crowds around the Duomo every time you step outside. It’s about a fifteen-minute walk to Palazzo Pitti, and you can actually get to Santo Spirito in maybe ten minutes on foot. The street itself is quieter than you’d expect, though you’ll still hear some traffic in the morning (nothing terrible, just… it’s a city). What I really appreciated was having actual Florentines as neighbors – there’s a little alimentari around the corner where the owner remembers your face after two visits, and the morning espresso crowd at the bar across the street includes more locals than tourists.
The rooms have this warm, lived-in quality that somehow manages to feel both rustic and polished. The beds are genuinely comfortable – I’m talking about the kind where you actually want to hit snooze, not just survive until checkout. They’ve got these beautiful terracotta floors that stay cool even in summer, and the bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for a European hotel. I stayed there in late September, and the natural light streaming through those tall windows was just… perfect for reading in the afternoon. The staff operates with that particular Italian efficiency where everything gets handled, but nobody’s hovering over you asking if you need anything every five minutes. Check-in was smooth, they speak excellent English, and when I needed dinner recommendations, the front desk guy actually drew me a little map with his personal favorites rather than just handing over a generic list.
Here’s the thing about this place – it’s got a 9-star rating, and after staying there, I get it. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Florence or compete with those massive luxury chains. Instead, it feels like someone took a beautiful old building, respected its bones, and created something that works for people who actually want to experience the city rather than just Instagram it. The breakfast is solid (proper Italian coffee, obviously), the common areas invite you to linger, and you’re positioned perfectly to explore both the artisan workshops of Oltrarno and the major sights without feeling like you’re stuck in a tourist bubble. If you’re looking for marble everything and a concierge in white gloves, this probably isn’t your place. But if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere with character, where the neighborhood feels real and the hotel respects both its history and your intelligence – well, that’s exactly what you’ll find here.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The breakfast. Not a lot of choice and cold food which should have been hot. No interest from staff when mentioned to them.
What could be improved: Location was too far out.
Shuttle bus was no good as it was advertised drop off in centre yet it was a good 30 minutes walk to get to the centre.
Night time pick up should have been later.
Road works and closures made driving around impossible.
What could be improved: The Restaurant menu could be better, it was very limited and we stayed for a week and it was the same menu every day
What could be improved: Bath shower leaked water every shower but other than that the place was perfect.
What could be improved: The pool was stained with algae all around it, with grass growing out of it. Room was advertised as having a spa bath but did not. Coffee provided in the room could be of higher quality.
What could be improved: Restaurant menu a bit restrictive, with limited choice and doesn’t seem to change from one night to the next. On the plus side, the waiter allowed a choice from room service menu, which was great.
What could be improved: Transportation to the city is limited and could be expensive
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Abit to far from central florance but there was a shuttle running but not till late evening so if you wanted a dinner out in the city it's an expensive taxi back to the hotel.
