You know what caught me off guard about Al Canto B&B? It’s tucked away on Via Aretina in Campo Di Marte, which honestly isn’t where most tourists end up – and that’s exactly why I loved it. I mean, you’re still in Florence, but you’re in a neighborhood where actual Florentines live and work. There’s this authentic rhythm to the area that you just don’t get near the Duomo, where every other storefront is selling leather bags to cruise ship passengers. The B&B itself sits in what feels like a residential pocket, so mornings are pretty quiet except for the occasional Vespa puttering by and the sound of shutters opening across the street.

The place has this genuinely warm, family-run feel that’s getting harder to find these days. When I walked in, there was this wonderful smell of fresh coffee and something baking – turns out they actually make their breakfast bread daily, which is sort of a small miracle in a city where a lot of places just heat up cornetti from a supplier. The rooms are what you’d expect from a well-maintained 4-star spot, but it’s the little touches that stick with you. The owner (I think his name was Marco, but don’t quote me on that) actually sat down with me and drew out a little map showing the best route to walk into the historic center – not just the obvious path, but the one that takes you past this tiny church with incredible frescoes that most people miss entirely. He also warned me about the construction happening near Santa Croce that week, which saved me about twenty minutes of confused wandering.

What really makes this place work is the location balance it strikes. You’re far enough out that you can actually park nearby without losing your mind (there’s street parking that locals know about, plus a garage two blocks away), but close enough that you can walk to the main sights in about fifteen minutes. The Campo Di Marte area has some genuinely good restaurants too – there’s this trattoria called Da Rocco about three streets over where you’ll be the only tourist, and they do this incredible ribollita that tastes like someone’s nonna made it. Which she probably did, actually. The B&B’s breakfast situation is solid – nothing fancy, but proper espresso and fresh pastries, plus they had local honey that was honestly better than anything I’ve had at much pricier places. I stayed there in late September when Florence was still pretty crowded, and coming back to this quiet street each evening felt like a little escape from all the museum lines and tour groups. If you’re the type who wants to experience Florence but also wants to sleep somewhere that feels connected to how the city actually lives and breathes, Al Canto hits that sweet spot perfectly.

Very recommendable! Very welcoming and friendly hosts, a quiet oasis on the outskirts of Florence. I liked the idea of one big table for all guests, so one could meet the other guests too. Bus nr.14 brings you direct to the centre of Florence.
