Podere Le Volpaie – Arancia
Montecatini Val di Cecina, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of agriturismos in Tuscany, but Podere Le Volpaie actually surprised me – and I mean that in the best way. When you’re winding through those cypress-lined roads toward Montecatini Val di Cecina (honestly, the GPS gets a bit confused once you turn off the main road), you start wondering if you’ve made the right choice. But then you pull up to this beautifully restored farmhouse at Loc. Le Volpaie 62 A3, and suddenly everything clicks into place. The Arancia room – yeah, it’s named after oranges, which makes perfect sense when you see the citrus trees scattered around the property – has this incredible view that stretches across the Val di Cecina. I’m talking about that golden, rolling landscape that looks like someone painted it specifically for postcards, except it’s real and it’s right outside your window.
The thing about this place is that it feels genuinely lived-in rather than overly polished. The owners clearly know their stuff when it comes to hospitality – check-in was smooth, they actually gave useful recommendations about avoiding the tourist traps in nearby Volterra, and the breakfast (oh my god, the breakfast) features ingredients from their own gardens. I mean, you can literally see where your tomatoes grew while you’re eating them. The room itself strikes that perfect balance between rustic charm and modern comfort – exposed beams overhead, but excellent Wi-Fi and a bathroom that doesn’t make you feel like you’re roughing it. What really won me over was how quiet it gets at night. No traffic noise, just the occasional sound of olive branches rustling in the breeze. During the day, you’re close enough to explore the medieval streets of Montecatini Val di Cecina (it’s maybe a 10-minute drive), but you feel completely removed from any crowds or chaos.
Here’s the honest truth – with a 9.8 rating, I went in expecting to find something to nitpick, but I genuinely struggled. Maybe the road up can be a bit narrow if you’re not used to Italian country driving? That’s really reaching though. The value here is exceptional, especially considering you’re getting that authentic Tuscan experience without the Chianti region prices. If you’re someone who appreciates good wine (and there’s plenty of local stuff to try), loves to wake up to actual countryside views, and wants to feel like you’ve discovered something special rather than just booking another generic hotel, this is your spot. Plus, it’s perfectly positioned for day trips to Volterra or even San Gimignano if you don’t mind a bit of driving through some of the most beautiful landscape in Italy.

What could be improved: None
Close to Volterra and with many dining options in the nearby residential towns. You will need a car.
AC in all rooms kept the apartment nice and cool during the Tuscany heatwave.
What could be improved: Not much room to sit outside: a very tiny balcony next to the noisy AC and a picknick bench at the courtyard where an SUV was parked within arms length of the table, making it near impossible to wine and dine outside all week.
During the weekends, many racing motorcycles with very loud exhausts make it impossible to enjoy a ‘calm’ day in at the pool.
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: The only thing I can mention - noise from trucks going by time to time on the road going around the place. But nothing major!
What could be improved: Hot water took a while to get acquainted with
