Hotel Excelsior
Massa, ItalyFirst Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Excelsior on Via Cesare Battisti, you immediately understand why couples rate this place so highly. The building has that classic Italian seaside elegance — not flashy, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the facade that makes you slow down and appreciate where you are. I mean, you’re literally steps from Marina di Massa‘s coastline, and the hotel sits in what locals consider the sweet spot of the area. The entrance feels intimate rather than grand, which honestly sets the perfect tone for a romantic getaway.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what makes the location special — you’re positioned right where the town’s energy meets the tranquil beachfront. Via Cesare Battisti is one of those streets that locals actually use, so you get a real sense of Italian coastal life without feeling like you’re stuck in a tourist bubble. The beach is practically at your doorstep, but you can also wander into the heart of Marina di Massa for dinner or morning coffee. What I really appreciated was how easy it became to slip into that Italian rhythm — beach in the morning, aperitivo in the late afternoon, then a leisurely stroll back to the hotel.
The Rooms
The accommodations at Hotel Excelsior strike that perfect balance between comfort and character. You know what impressed me most? The attention to details that actually matter when you’re traveling as a couple — good lighting, comfortable seating areas, and windows that frame the surrounding area beautifully. The rooms feel authentically Italian without being overly themed, if that makes sense. There’s enough space to spread out your things, but it’s cozy enough that you want to linger over morning coffee before heading out to explore.
Dining & Atmosphere
The dining experience here feels refreshingly unpretentious — they focus on doing the basics really well rather than trying to impress with elaborate presentations. Breakfast actually gives you a proper start to the day, with local touches that remind you you’re on the Italian coast. The overall atmosphere throughout the hotel leans romantic without being heavy-handed about it. Staff members seem to genuinely understand that couples want attentive service without constant interruption, which is honestly harder to find than you’d think.
Why Guests Love It
After spending time here, I completely understand why Hotel Excelsior consistently earns such positive feedback from couples. It’s that rare combination of prime location, genuine Italian hospitality, and an atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and connect with both the place and your travel companion. The hotel doesn’t try to be everything to everyone — instead, it does exactly what it sets out to do exceptionally well. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape or simply want to experience Marina di Massa from an ideal base, this place delivers on its promises without any unnecessary fuss.
Tuscany’s apartments welcome families with poolside pergolas, cooking classes, and day trips to Pisa’s leaning icon.

What could be improved: Car parking too expensive
What could be improved: Parking is costly
Japanese meal was excellent
What could be improved: Can't say anything
Cleaned room when I was gone
Friendly
What could be improved: Should be able to to get eggs other than scrambled for free
What could be improved: No negatives
What could be improved: The only complaint but this is maybe was my mistake not to read carefully the options that this hotel does not have a private beach only just a few steps from it, however they give You discount for renting a bed-chair-sun-chair and umbrella. Sometimes it is tricky to find a place on the beach in this way. But otherwise everything was perfect. So from the second day we new the “rules” and reserved the place in advance. The only complaint that sometimes in the evening the wifi can be slow.
