Mikeme
Carrara, ItalyYou know what? I was honestly a bit skeptical when I first pulled up to Mikeme on Via Provinciale Carrara-Avenza – I mean, it’s right on the main road between Carrara and Avenza, so I was expecting traffic noise and that generic highway hotel vibe. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible.
The thing about staying here is you’re literally five minutes from the historic center of Carrara, which most tourists completely overlook because they’re rushing off to the Cinque Terre or Florence. But honestly, if you’ve never wandered through the marble quarries or seen the workshops where Michelangelo himself sourced his stone, you’re missing something pretty incredible. The hotel staff – and I mean this genuinely – actually know their stuff about the area. The woman at reception (I think her name was Giulia?) gave me these detailed directions to the Cave di Marmo that were way better than anything Google Maps suggested. She even mentioned which quarry tours run in English and warned me about the dust if I was planning to wear white, which… well, let’s just say I appreciated the heads up.
The rooms themselves have this clean, modern feel without being sterile – there’s actually character here. My room faced away from the main road, so it was surprisingly quiet at night, though I did notice some early morning delivery trucks around 7 AM (nothing terrible, just worth mentioning if you’re a super light sleeper). The bathroom was spotless and had one of those rainfall showers that actually works properly – you know how hit-or-miss those can be in Italian hotels. What really got me was the little touches: they stock local olive oil and vinegar in the breakfast area, and there’s this small selection of books about Carrara’s history in the lobby that someone clearly curated with care, not just grabbed from a wholesale catalog.
Parking was straightforward, which honestly can make or break a place when you’re driving through Tuscany with luggage. The breakfast spread was solid – fresh cornetti from a local bakery, proper espresso (not that terrible machine stuff), and they had both the sweet Italian breakfast options and some heartier choices for tourists who need their eggs. I actually ended up chatting with a German couple who’d been coming back here for three years running because, as they put it, “it just works.” And that’s kind of the perfect way to describe Mikeme – it’s not flashy or Instagram-famous, but everything functions exactly as it should. The location gives you easy access to both the marble sites and the coast (Marina di Carrara is maybe ten minutes away), the service feels personal rather than corporate, and the 9.3 rating makes total sense once you’re there. Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you – they just quietly do everything right.
