Hotel Certosa Di Maggiano
Siena, ItalyYou know what? I almost drove right past Hotel Certosa Di Maggiano the first time I visited – it’s tucked away on this quiet stretch of Strada Di Certosa, about ten minutes outside Siena’s city center, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. This isn’t your typical tourist hotel crammed into the historic center where you’re dodging crowds just to get to your room. Instead, you’re pulling up to what feels like a private estate, this beautiful old monastery that’s been converted into something really extraordinary. The building itself dates back centuries, and you can feel that history the moment you walk through the entrance – thick stone walls, those gorgeous arched corridors, the kind of authentic details you just can’t fake.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep the monastery’s peaceful, almost spiritual atmosphere while making it genuinely luxurious. The rooms are spacious in a way that’s rare in Italy – I mean, we’re talking about actual closet space here, plus bathrooms where you don’t have to squeeze around the sink. The beds are seriously comfortable (I’m picky about this stuff), and there’s something about waking up to those views of the Tuscan countryside that just… well, it makes you want to extend your stay. The restaurant is worth mentioning too – they source a lot of ingredients locally, and the chef actually knows what he’s doing with traditional Tuscan dishes without making them feel stuffy or overly fancy. I had this incredible wild boar ragu that I still think about.
The location thing is interesting because yes, you’ll need a car or you’ll be taking taxis into town, but honestly? After spending days wandering Siena’s medieval streets (gorgeous but exhausting), coming back to this quiet sanctuary feels like the perfect balance. The staff really knows their stuff about the area too – they pointed me toward this little wine bar in town that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me detailed directions to some hiking trails that weren’t in any guidebook. Parking is easy here, which anyone who’s tried to navigate a rental car through Siena’s historic center will appreciate. The pool area is lovely during the warmer months, though it can get a bit busy if there’s a wedding happening – they do host events, so just keep that in mind when booking. Overall, this place strikes that sweet spot between authentic Italian charm and modern comfort that’s harder to find than you’d think. It’s the kind of hotel where you actually want to hang around the property, not just use it as a place to crash between sightseeing.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: In a word everything
What could be improved: There was some uneveness in the support staff(housekeeping).
The main disappointment was that the hotel plays music much too loud. The music could be heard in our room until late in the evening. Music should remain in the background in such a setting. The staff should monitor families with small children to ensure that there is no disturbance to guests. We had children shouting outside of our room.
What could be improved: It’s a bit of pain getting back after dinner in town. Taxis can be hard to come by
